[noob alert] Warning [/noob alert]

Sorry guys - probably a really stupid question, but just can't find the answer anywhere.

My son was recently given a Wii, and we already had a GameCube. He has since been given a new GC game that runs on both machines, but requires more blocks of storage than exist on the old memory cards we had.

So, I've bought a Wii key SD Adaptor from Ebay, intending only to use an SD card in it to provide the storage required for game save data. There is/was no intent to backup games or anything like that, and the Wii is completely un-modded in any way.

Problem is, with a 2Gb SD card in the adapter, all I get is an error that "the device in card slot A is unusable" - on both the GC and the Wii consoles. If I plug the SD card directly into the front Wii memory slot, it works fine - so the SD card is OK.

Have I got a dud adapter, or does the SD card need some special formatting (it was preformatted to FAT16), or is there something else I don't know...

Thanks in advance,

G
