Do you just update via the wii ? Will 4.0 affect playing any backup games with a wiikey updated to 1.9s ? Thanks

Nope it will not effect your modchip.
It will effect homebrew but there is a work around for that if you want to use homebrew.

I also have a 3.1U and 1.9s wiikey. Did updating the firmware to 4.0U allow you to play Punch Out? It is weird that I am reading all this "stay on 3.2U" warning on multiple threads, and now it is OK to upgrade to 4.0U.
I do not have Homebrew. I just have the wiikey (with first edition Wii). All i need to do is upgrade to 4.0U?? please confirm.
thanks

Allot of the threads you read that say to stay at 3.2 firmware are old threads. Also some agree and disagree at what firmware to stay at.
Most everything that can be used on 3.2 firmware can now be used on 4.0 firmware. So I see no reason to really stay at 3.2 but that is my opinion.
Also if you are only interested in using your Modchip and not homebrew then updating to 4.0 firmware will not effect your Modchip.
So either update or don't that is your choice.

Thanks for the quick reply. Yes, there are a lot of disagreements and alot of guides out there, and it is confusing as heck! I got my Wii from a friend, and a lot of these threads are WAY over my head.
All I am interested in is playing backups via the modchip, and for the last month, I have been unsuccessful at: Wii Active, Punch out, Excite Bot....all backups still work though.
There is a site (http://wum.talevas.com/?page=dev) that lists the three games above as containing the 4.0U. Do you recommend using this for firmware update? I am afraid to update via the internet just cause I don't trust Nintendo.
Thanks

As far as I know there is no games out yet that contain the 4.0U update. They are all 3.4 and below.
As I said if you have a modchip and do not use homebrew then it is safe to updarte to 4.0 firmware.
Or update using the disc thenselves.

Hey mike66g,
I also have the Wiikey v1 but I don't have the firmware updated, anyway, I was getting the same effects when trying to play Ghostbusters. I can select it from the channel window but then I get a black screen after hitting start. I'm on 3.3U. Anyway, I wanted to know if you updated to 4.0 and if that did the trick for your Punchout game. Checking with W.i.U 1.0 this Ghostbusters doesn't contain an update. Thanks.

Hello,
Yes, I did update to 4.0 and Punch Out now works and all my other backups still work with the Wiikey. I have had no problems .
