I'm looking to purchase a hackable PSP Slim

My friend hacks his PSP and I am looking to get into it as well. This is what I have been told.

I can go to Gamestop, purchase a used slim, reset it to factory settings, and if the firmware is under 3.8 then I am good to go. If not I can return it and try another slim.

Would this work? Also do you guys have any other reccomendations? The PSP Slims at Gamestop are 140 bucks, but price doesn't really matter to me so as long as its under like 200 I'm good. Also my friend told me to get a Slim over a fat if possible.
