4.0 Punchout update & trucha signed games

Sorry if this was already asked but I've gone through all the 4.0 threads and I'm not sure if any of them are the same as my situation (not sure about some of the lingo).

I have a hard modded wii w/ 3.2U.
No HBC installed.
I play .iso back-up discs (including my trucha signed - GH games) and have one wad that I installed with the TP method and start it thru my wii menu (not an SD card).
Put in my new Punchout back-up and it's asking me to update.
People are saying 4.0 is fine if I don't do homebrew... so is my wad game and the trucha signed considered homebrew?

Should I just update?
Or should I install HBC first along with all these various wad installers, ios, bootme, etc...?
If so, can someone please give me a chronological list of what to install.
I just wanna be able to play my back-ups (including trucha signed) and the occasional wad (wiiware).
