First off, yes I know it's a long subject line but I wanted to be specific.
Second, if that was covered somewhere already I'm sorry I searched but never found anything that tackled my specific topic.
Ok time for the issue at hand, I'm on the edge here with wanting to purchase a new 360 and have done a lot of research into the hardware side of the 360 and found that all of the models are identical now aside from having a HDD and the size of it. If possible I would like to purchase an Arcade model and purchase my own HDD to put into the system because as everybody knows MS is overcharging for a 120gig drive by at least $50.
So is there a way to purchase a HDD to put into the 360 and have it function as if it was the pre-installed factory version without soft or hard modding the system?
I know you can soft or hard mod the system pending your own preference but this can impact your ability to use the Xbox Live functionality or maybe it doesn't anymore? Please keep in mind I am a noob when it comes to this area of customization but am by no means tech handicapped. Also I am very insistant on not wanting to void my warranty because let's face it the 360 hasn't had a strong track record of reliability with RRoD and the latest E74 error.
Thank you all in advance for any help and feedback.

yes its very possible... no modification is required to the xbox360 itself... all the modding is done to the HDD itself... the HDD is flashed to make it compatible with the xbox360 system itself...
google "hddhackr" without the quotes... that is the utility to flash the HDD... you will find lots of information. a WD BEVS series HDD is required...
only problem is that you will need a plastic cage for the drive... you can prob find them on ebay for around $20... or you could just buy a 20gb HDD off ebay cause it would come with the plastic cage and ya could use that for the 120gb western digital drive

What do you mean by a plastic cage for it? I'm just a little lost on what you mean by that!?
Playto, I've done this to the HDD that is currently in my 360, and like Donaldo said, look up hddhackr. The thing I'm just confused by is the plastic cage thing. I just bought a drive off eBay and swapped it out with the drive currently in the 360.
The model you will be looking for is this: WD1200BEVS

Oh gotcha, the shell for the 360 HDD. I was just thinking he would just want to swap the drives, but guess not... Thanks for filling me in on this!

Ok so it seems pretty cut and dry for getting the WD 120gb drive in there. What about like a 500gb drive?
Also are you guys aware of any differences between the Elite and Arcade versions? I plan to purchase an Arcade because they are the only model confirmed to be shipped with the new Jasper chipset and then either put in a 500gb HDD unless it becomes too much of a hassle, I have found new official 120gb Xbox HDD's on ebay for about $65 only about $20 more than purchasing the Western Digital model.

You can't go bigger then 120GB, because M$ hasn't had a larger drive then that on the 360, so it's not possible.

How long ago did you purchase your Arcade? I had been reading that they were all being built with the Jasper set that and the RE5 Special Edition bundle was 100% confirmed to have Jasper but I read about high failure rates with that console and the included copy of RE5. So with Microsoft it's hard to know what to expect these days...
As far as the hard drive size restriction, the only way around that would be with custom firmware flashed over the system itself to accept the larger capacity correct?

No there's just no way to add a larger then 120GB HDD to the Xbox 360. If you are asking to use it for saves and what not, you can't use that. But for media, ya, it could just plug into the USB.
I mean if you did put a larger HDD in the system, I've heard that it will only see 120GB of it.

See that's what I did, was I just took my 20GB out, and put the 120GB in its place. But yes the downside is the way of getting your saves and what not.

I ur right about that. I guess every little mod has some little risk that comes along w/ it.
