I've been told that its possible to setup a xbox 360 to connect to your computer via a wireless connection and access the media files so you can play/stream them on your lcd tv.
my understanding is that i need:
1. a xbox 360 obviously, but can I just use an xbox 360 arcade?
2. a wireless adapter for the xbox 360
3. media center running on the xbox 360 (do I need a modded xbox 360 to do this?)
I was originally going to buy a standalone media center like "popcorn hour" but I figured hey I could do with an xbox 360 too.

1-3 are correct, but you need media center on your PC as well. i think you can do it from within WMP11 if you dont have WMC, but its a lot easier with WMC.
as with the suggestion of tversity, it will work as well. unless the NXE dash made it so it couldnt, i know it made either tversity, or ORB not work, but i believe they came out with an update to the affected program to remedy this issue.

Media center on your pc is not needed at all. Simply install tversity and then that becomes your media center pc and then you simply add what you want to stream. I used this program daily and it's awesome.

are you running the NXE dash or the old one? because i thought when NXE came out, it made one of the streaming methods (tversity, or ORB) not work anymore). i heard they were working on a fix, but i never really followed it since i dont stream, i just put the stuff on usb drives and watch it that way, less strain on the computer, console and everything.

Also you save a lot in your electricity bill, not having to have the computer feeding on power.
I use an external notebook harddrive with an y-usb cable, it occupies both usb slots on the Xbox 360 but I don't need an external power source as I have no unoccupied power plug nearby.
Xbox 360: Slim untouched with a faked 320 GB harddrive for XBL, phat with LT 3.0, played Halo early, so going on live would be an instand ban, also with a faked 320 GB harddrive
PS3: Untouched 160 GB Slim, 60 GB Fat with latest Rogero and 160 GB internal harddrive.
PSVita: hardly ever play it
GameCube: Black with a Viper chip installed. With gameboy player. Trying to get a Wavebird controller.

UPnP streaming still works fine post-NXE.
You have 3 options really. Windows Media Center or Windows Media Player (both are limited, because you can only stream the codecs they support) or a UPnP server such as TVersity which can transcode on the fly. I use PS3 Media Server which despite the name, works on the 360.

It's actually easier to set up WMP. All you do is click the option to enable sharing, then click the button to give the 360 access and you're done. It couldn't be any easier really.

i just installed tversity last night and it was much smoother and easier to do compared to windows way of doing it. hell, you can even watch youtube and hulu vids on your box. only prob i have is sometimes it does not recgonize my hulu queue. however vids, pics, and mp3's stored on my hdd of my pc stream almost instantly, with no lag, and best of all, it's all wireless! tversity = 2 thumbs up
