my Wii is LU55 age
I have installed BootMii and backed up my entire NAND @ v3.2U
I was having trouble getting USB loader to work with all my titles so
I did a System Menu v4.0 update thinking the games that didn't work may need v4 (ala PunchOut)
still the same games don't work
i used this guide
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/773505
how do i verify what version cIOS and IOS blocks i have loaded?
can someone link me to an explanation of what cIOS and IOS mean. -answered
suggestions to get USB loader working for all titles?

You prolly know this but its worth a shot.

Unlike backup loader usb loader is region specific. So if your using a pal machine it must be pal backups.

All my ISO's are NTSC-U like my Wii...cuz i backed them all up off of the originals i own, of course. ;)
I wonder how region free ISO's behave?

Well, you did not say how the game was not working. What happens when you try to use it?

Game locks up? There is a bug in IOS 36 v10 that does cause some games to lock up while playing them. To fix this I found that going to IOS36 v9 will do the trick. The drawback is that your USB loader will not display covers. Some loaders will not even run on V9 (will give code dump and lock the WII). I know for sure Ultimate USB loader v7 will run on IOS 36 v9.

Game simply does not load or goes to black screen(locked up)when trying to launch it. Again that can be the CIOS you are using in combanation with your loader version. If you are trying to use one of those truley spiffed up loaders then you must have IOS 36 v10 but that will cause some games to lock while playing. IOS36 v11 promises to fix this issue. We will have to wait for it to come out though.

There is another IOS called 38 v12. It has the same bugs as IOS 36 v10. So using that IOS will not fix IOS36 v10 issues.

If I did not touch on how your game is acting when trying to play it please specify so you can get better support. Knowing how it is acting will speed up a solution for you.

Some games the USB loader screen goes dim and stops
some games display a black screen
i am using the USB Loader GX and cIOS38 v13b
If i load cIOS36 v9 will it overwrite cIOS38 v13b?
somehow i thought that the 38 part of IOS38 was a block #; so the whole IOS was made of IOS1+IOS2+IOS3+...etc

i'll try loading cIOS36 v9 but i don't expect it to work

Yes cIOS36_rev9 will overwrite cIOS38_rev13b.

But I have NTSC(U) PunchOut and cIOS36_rev13b using USB Loader GX and it works.

Make sure you have the latest version of USB Loader GX. Go to settings and at the bottom in the middle next to the star there is (I think a Wii Console with a down arrow) click on that and see if there is a new USB Loader version. If there is then download it. Then try punch out again (if the update icon is not there make sure you have unlocked USB Loader GX default password is: ab121b).

Also keep in mind not all games are compatible. Go HERE for a compatibility list.

Also USB Loader is region free on region compatible games. I have a hand full of PAL (forceNTSC when booting) and they work fine.

Thats a lot of head bashing to figure out that my Seagate FreeAgent drive isn't compatible
I was power cycling the drive to get USB Loader to recognize it.

I'll try tomorrow with a generic hdd

Of the games you mentioned I also have Animal crossing, Klonoa and Need for speed. Never had an issue with need for speed on any IOS. IOS36 V10 was makeing animal crossing lock up at random. I switched to V9 to fix animal crossing before I started playing Klonoa. That game had never given me issues. Of course I do not know how it acts on V10 havent tried it.

My Wii is systen V3.3U with OCT 23 patch. It could be an issue with system V4. Although a way was found into that version I am finding a bunch of posts where people are having trouble with some games. 3.3 and lower seem to be having far less issues. I wont go to 4 unless there is a need to do so. So far I have not had that need. For me to look into this further for you I need two bits of info. How old is your WII and the first three digits of the serial. I have been reading that systems that start with LRU may not work right for this stuff (at least now)

Wii firmware version has nothing to do with it.

It is either a cIOS or USB HDD compatibility issue. It seems when the cIOS is updated some issues in games will go away but others will come up for other games. Kind of a cat and mouse game. cIOS36_rev9 and cIOS38_rev12 seem to be the most stable.

I have all the same games as you Mr_Del and I am on 4.0U firmware with no issues.

since i last spoke i have downgraded to v3.3U re-applied cIOS38v13b
MIOS, cIOS60 patch, ran a downgrader that is supposed to Trucha patch me (it didn't do anything)
upgraded my USB Loader GX (its still 1.0)
loaded Yafuze USB loader 1.5
re-formatted HDD's
re loaded ISO's onto the HDD

and still the same 10 games work and nothing else

Clues:
when the USB loader fails to load the WiiMote will not sync

I have "configurable usb loader" and cIOS38_rev12. Used a Maxtor passport drive. These give me the best results ATM.

Western Digital makes the passport. Its a USB powerd HD (all passports). Maxtor makes the One touch (Some are USB powered and some are Wall powered) I only say this because there are reports of people having issues with USB powered drives. Others are not haveing the issues with those. Wall Powered HD seem to have a much lower complaint level.

I had a passport on my PC. The thing would lose connection so much that I eventualy installed it internaly. Having experianced USB powerd HD issues I can see why it is causeing problems in the HB scene.

Not true, I have the FreeAgent and its fine. To use that drive do this, first go in its settings with the program it has installed on it and turn off the power saver, so it never spins down. Second, you need to leave the Seagate software on it, so what I did is use Vista to shrink the partition down in half, and then I used the WBFS manager to make a second wii partition. So I have about 150 gigs for NTFS stuff and 150 for Wii. It works fine. You just have to have it partitioned because it needs the seagate files on it to work properly in a Wii so that it won't spin down.

I cover my bases...
1)Xbox w/xecuter 2.6 solderless
2)Ps2 (slim) w/DMS4 Lite
3)Ps2 V7 w/DMS4 Lite and 200 Gig Maxtor HDD
4)GC w/qoob pro

Good call, I used the Seagate tools to set the powersave to 5 hours.
I doubt that it needs any files on the HDD to work correctly, the files that are present are compiled to run under Windoze or sMacOS. The Wii OS wouldn't know what to do with them. The drive itself runs firmware stored in flash; like the Wii only much simpler.
