i read a majority of this thread and im pretty sure im going to have to pay sony $150, but i just figured id explain my situation anyway. my ps3 boots up, and i can play music, movies, games, and access the internet like normal, but after about 5 minutes it just shuts down. it freezes then the yellow light flashes and then it beeps and flashes a red light until its manually turned off. i was just wondering if anyone knew if this was a minor problem like a new fan or power supply. if anyone has any suggestions please let me know, thanks.
Quote:Sometimes, depending on how your PS3 is sitting and even what it's sitting on, you can burn up your fan motor.
For example, if you're PS3 is sitting on the "bottom" (the large flat side) on a glass or stone table (both of which hold heat really well), it'll burn up in a heartbeat.
Try placing your PS3 on something temporary, like a cardboard box on the floor, and be sure to set it on it's side (that way it's standing tall and has the Disk Slot at the top of the front side). This should allow for much better airflow and keep your PS3 away from things like Table Heat (because once a glass or stone table warms up, it's not cooling off untill the system is turned off).
^ Written moments ago to another AD Member. You might want to give that a try and if it works: Yay! If it doesn't: Well... Odds are your fan is already burned up. I've never heard of a PS3 powersupply going "partially" bad, but I suppose it's possible. Typically if a problem occures in the Powersupply, normal usage of the PS3 becomes impossible.
So if adjusting it's position doesn't solve the problem, and you were at 50/50 between replacing the fan or replacing the powersupply, I'd vote Fan. Especially if the fan isn't making hardly any noise.
