Ok, so I thought I did everything right and google isn't helping- I am using a WD 320 usb hd on my ps3 and it isn't showing up. Furthermore, the disk isn't spinning. It works on my laptop and it worked on my old 360. It's formatted in fat32 and I made sure that the folders are set up correctly. It has a dual usb plug. I've tried to plug both of them in and nothing changes. The ps3 reads my flash drive and my iPod without any problems. So, I am willing to get a new external hard drive to work with my ps3, but I want to make sure I'm not missing anything.

Recap:
Formatted correctly
Folders set up correctly
Worked on 360 and laptop
Dual-usb both plugged in, but disc isn't spinning
Ps3 can read flash drive and iPod, so it isn't an issue with ps3

Is it just incompatable? I thought all external hdd were compatible if properly formated with the right folder hiarchy.

Sorry, not a WD, it's a SimpleTech Signature Mini320 GB

Only thing I can think of would be maybe its not being supplied with enough power? Try connecting the 2nd usb cord to a laptop/computer and see if it gets enough juice then.

Thanks, I'll give it a try after work, but it seems really strange that it wouldn't have the juice for an ext hdd, but plenty for a 160gb iPod..

Well the ipod has its own battery, and besides that it was designed for low power consumption, the external hdd is likely just a desktop/laptop hdd in a case. That being said the ps3 should have enough to power it, but we'll see once you try what I mentioned.

Make sure you disconnect it properly from your PC before you bring it to your PS3. "Safely Remove Hardware", before disconnecting, or else the PS3 will see it as still married to the PC and not available for use. Sometimes simply turning off the external when connected to your PC isn't enough, it needs to be disconnected by the PC.

My Western Digital does funky things if I do not disconnect this way, so this could be your issue as well.

1. Right click the checkmark in the task bar.
2. Safely remove hardware, choose your drive and press stop.
