What is ad hoc Mode for? Does anyone know?

every one but u, ad-hoc, is multiplayer mode on soem psp games, the idea of it is 2 people have a psp, 1 person has a game with adhoc, the person goes into adhoc mode, and finds the closest psp, and connects to it, enabling multiplayer on 2 psps.
