Xbox 360 Freezing Issue

I've recently updated 2 360's IExtreme to 1.6, the first 360 has no issues, however the 2nd 360 was fine for a number of days but now suddently it has a freezing issue, and i'm unable to determine what the problem is.
During game-play i'm able to play between 5-20mins before my 360 freezes, on some games (e.g. Unreal Taurnament) the video image blurs 5 mins before a freeze, game only freezes during games, first the video freezes, then 5 seconds later the sound.
The freeze occurs with all games (the originals and ones that worked before the update), and the console is in a well ventilated area. I've also elevated the console/power pack to provide better air circulation.
I've contacted xbox customer support and they believe it is a hardware issue, but because my Warranty expired last month, i'd have to pay to repair the console.
I was wondering if anybody had any ideas as to what the problem could be or if there was anything i could do to fix this issue.
Thanks in advance for all the help
I wasn't sure if this was the correct place to post this thread, and my previous one was in the wrong section, could the old thread be deleted by mods.
Thanks again =)

overheating is one of the most common problems with xbox 360... google it and you'd probably find millions of results

i dont believe its an over heating problem, as i've delt with a number of 360's which have that, by taking the casing off, but this one still freezes and i think its realted to the 1.6 update

Try change the firmware and see if it still happens?

I don't think firmware flashing have anything to do with the freezing issue. Usually freezing leads to RRoD.

i've tried re-flashing the 360 with IE 1.5/1.6 a number of times and that did not help, i've had 2 RROD 360's in the past, but they did not have these symptoms, so i'm guessing its something else.
Thanks for all the replies
Are there any fixes i go do to help? As i've searched through google and havn't found another thread with the list of symptoms.

like we said, it's most likely going to be some sort of hardware failure. I had the same issues before I got the rrod and had to send it in.
Definitely not a firmware issue.

I had the exact same problem and it turned out to be the GPU. It would freeze and then after a while of doing that, I cut it on and was greeted with E74.

Keep letting it mess up, turn it off and on, eventually you will get an error. If its the RRoD or E74 they should repair it for free, or when you say its out of warranty do you mean out of the three year extended warranty?
You can do either, success rate is good on the xclamp fix, but a lot of them come back. You might get lucky and its fixed for good, or it may come back some time. You could buy the arcade 360 for $200 and just use all of your stuff and it would be fine.
I guess it just all depends on what you want to do. If you get the new xbox it will have the lite-on and if you flash them yourself you need some extra hardware to do it. I use the USB Extractor by Maximus.
So I guess it all depends on preference, but if you are still covered by the extended warranty, I would go that route.

hey but its modified with 1.6 i dont think gates will fix it for free even if it under the three year extension, not 100 % sure on that but if you have your original stock id reflash it with that then send it in so they wont deny it and send it back, or if your more into Do it yourself and cant wait for them to send you a refurb pluck the clamps clean the paste apply better paste and screw it down, let her heat up and shes good to go id say most og the time its the GPU im pretty sure its the GPU in your case.

Most of the time they don't even check the firmware, many people have sent modded 360's to ms and got them back repaired. Btw, i have never heard of ms sending you a kit to fix it yourself, or do you mean the x-clamp?

no kiddin'? ive heard some where returned if tampered, and you must mean they accept them in any condition; well...... if you pay them, they wont even notice the warranty stickers off. and yes i meant the xclamp replacement.

If the sticker is intact and there is no physical alterations they will usually accept it.

When I sent mine in for repair, I had very visible pry marks on the back, and the warranty sticker had one small dot missing in the top corner. They took it with no questions asked, got a new motherboard and a Lite-On drive.

The original poster of this thread said:

So M$ wants money since hes not under warranty, they give you bull most of the time its a hassle to get them to honor their warranty. He should keep restarting it a bunch of times till it messes up with 3 red lights then call and complain to fix it for free since they extended the warranty to E74 and 3 RROD errors for 3 more years, or to speed things up open it up take off the xclamps remove the heatsinks wipe off all the cheap MS crap and spit on the processor dies like you were spitting on bill gates face for making a crap machine then charging you to repair it when it breaks, hopefully that gives it 3 red lights all jokes aside. call MS tell them it has 3 red lights then hopefully they'll fix it for free/ be given a refurb unit which will probably go bad soon too, ive heard of people on their 7-8 xbox 360 its insane. Microsoft should include a mini electronics repair guide bundled with their console since its bound to mess up sooner than later then its either learn or pay to get it fixed.

I took the heatsinks off the cpu and gpu when my 360 RROD and found the paste was almost gone completely from the surfaces. I bought a tube of artic silver 5 and applied then screwed it all back together. It worked for 3hrs then froze, I reset and it RROD. Took the heatsinks off again and found the surface clear in spots no doubt making it overheat again. I've tried applying the paste sparingly, liberly with and without the DVD drive back in leaving it open with a fan on it! longest I had it going was 7hrs. Next day RROD. I'm thinking time for a PS3.
unless someone knows what I'm doing wrong?
