thanks to all you people on the forum for your help, it looks like its down to crap media as to why i have been getting rubbish copies from my dvd writer, i notced that when u go to buy 4x dvd's they give u a warning that if you only have a 1x or 2x drive that it could damage it. which is a bummer as they are loads of 4x discs out there now, should i be worried about this??

i burnt on a disc that said 4x the other day by mistake it it seemed to work fine!

I think the warning you are seeing refers to a problem with an old Pioneer DVD burner firmware that would cause damage to a 1X drive if a 4x DVD was used. There is a newer firmware that solves this problem. See link below.
