The thing is I don't know which modchip is installed in my scph-90006, and I need to disable it to run USBAdvance via MCboot to run games from USB memory stick. USBAdvance itself is loaded fine from the stick, and also correctly displays games on the memory stick, but every time freezes on "please wait...loading". I read this can be because of the modchip, so I'm trying to disable it. (The games are compatible and I tried at least 4 of them - neither worked).

My modchip has such characteristics:
to run DVD Video or PS1 games I need to hold reset button for a 0.5-1 second;
it doesn't run DVD Videos of other regions;
if I hold triangle or R1 while booting, disc doesn't start and I get system/browser screen (I think it's an evidence of dev1 boot feature);
holding Start or Select buttons while booting does nothing;
It can run DVD-/+RW.

So far, I know such methods:

pressing reset for 6 times from standby mode; (haven't tried yet)
pressing reset for 2 times from standby mode; (doesn't work)
holding reset for 5 or so seconds from standby; (doesn't work - ps2 just goes back to standby mode after I hold it for 2 secs or so);
holding start from standby mode. (doesn't work)

If your modchip has a config screen, just look to "disable macrovision"

If not then sorry can't help you.

Best way to identify a modchip is to take apart the PS2 and physically look, unless you have some sort of splash screen or config menu.

That sounds like a clone me but something rather new since it works in SCPH 90006 .
Try to hold down various button combination at boot . For me it works with circle + triangle for menu , start to disable , it's a Myth Chip . But pay attention , if you get to the config menu don't save any modifications because this could dible your chip forever

I don't want to open the console because it's very new with guarantee stickers. It's cinnabar red limited edition console exported from Asia, already premodded, and sellers don't know which chip is installed, their suppliers don't provide such info also.

I'm too quit surprised the chip doesn't autodetect ps1/dvd video, I thought all chips already do that, and I somehow also thought this "feature" in combination with other listed above would give up identity of the chip. Another addition - it runs (and reads 2nd layer of) DVD9 games just fine.

I'm aware that most of the clones isn't possible to disable at all (without opening the console) and also I know that some clones may die just on mere attempt to enter chip's menu, so I'm hesitating about trying triangle+circle and would rather prefer to try all known ways to disable chip without entering menu.

^_^ Don't be afraid , you enter the menu and press the reset button to exit and everything will be fine . I assume you already installed FMCB , if it works then don't worry you have a backup solution .
You could try to boot USB Advance from disc with your chip.. Why do you need it anyway?It sucks 1 of 10 games work..

If you think you have a modbo or matrix you can try the following commands.

Circle - Boots Chip/system into PSX DVD Video mode. This forces the PS2 to either play PS1 games or DVD movies.

Triangle - Forces the system to boot the Infinity Manager (if installed - To install, please refer to the Infinity Manager section in this tutorial)

Cross - Forces the system to bypass settings and boot to the Sony Browser with the chip enabled.

Start - This Disables the chip. Once this is done, tap the standby button to reset the system to finish disabling the chip. To Re-enable the chip you must place the system into standby.

Select - This forces a Fast boot on PS2 games. Basicly skipping the startup animation and PLaystaion 2 Logo on disc boot.

R1 - This boots a homebrew ELF file from the first memory card (mc0:/BOOT/BOOT.ELF) If installed - To install, please refer to the DEV1 section of this tutorial.

L1 - This boots a homebrew ELF file from the hard drive if installed (hdd0:/__boot/boot.elf) To install, please refer to the DEV2 section of this tutorial.

To enter the Configuration Menu, hold TRIANGLE AND CIRCLE at power on.

But to use R1 or L1 you first need to have the infinity manager installed and then "install homebrew" on Dev 1.
Tutorial is here if you have either modchip - link

Well, according to the latest data it's about 60%, at least I read about it several times. Basically, I don't want to wear off laser too much and "dance disco" with DVDRs. I know about jerking animations/movies in games played from USB device, but I don't care about that if games themselves run acceptable.

smokyrain, thanks for the info man, but it seems my chip isn't modbo or matrix because Start doesn't do anything as it seems, circle doesn't boot into PSX/DVD Video mode (I have to hold reset for 0.5-1 sec to boot into the mode instead).

PS: Does anyone except me think that Eject and Reset/Power buttons of the 9000x models are too hard to press? I mean Sony somehow removed the groove below the middle "ridge" of the previous slims. Only Japan Gods know why.

Oh it is about that 60%..not sure where it ever said that, but there are a few links here on compatibility sites.
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/767006#4690482

I used to play them off the usb drive, and change the IOPRP or DNAS on a lot of games to get them too work, but then I changed to the hdd on my FAT PS2 instead as it has way better compatiblity.

There are better tools now to do all that, plus transfer games to hdd.
I even tried the USBAdvance made for PS3 users and it works also on the PS2.

@greyest - if you want to play PS1 games on your SCPH 90006 , just check out "japedo's" profile
He has a video tutorial on how he does it on that model, by just blocking the sensors.

I read that on some forums, you may see it's so from this list for example.

Thanks, but I have no problems with ps1 games (except the chip doesn't auto-switch to ps1 mode, that's ok for me), as well as with PS2 ones, it's just that somehow USBAdvance doesn't run games for me. Tried to run it from CD, as well as from USB stick itself (via launchELF on CD), also removed the CD before launching USBa - neither helped. I think I'll try that PS3 version...

PS: Please, provide a link for the PS3 USBa working on PS2, I found some but the files inside archives are different, so I don't know which works.

PPS: Found the USBloader 0.2, I think that's it. Is it enough just to run USBLD_02.ELF instead of USBADVN.ELF, or there is something more for it to work properly?

PPPS: If I'll install FreeMCBoot on my memory card, will it be possible to delete it completely later if I'll want to, and how?

latest working usb loader v0.3 RC1 for PS3 - link

Just remember when using any usb loader, it is best too use an actual External USB hdd with its own power source, not a pen drive.

If you install FreeMCBoot to memory card, then to delete is just to format the memory card again or don't use that memory card when playing.
