Sony PSP Go is "a ripoff," says Pachter

article published on 11 June, 2009

Last week during the E3 Expo, Sony officially launched the PSP Go handheld, which removes the UMD drive, adds a slider design and and is slimmer than previous models. Today, expert gaming analyst Michael Pachter has called the system a "ripoff," claiming that Sony is severely overcharging for the handheld in North America. The console retails for $250 USD. Pachter adds that the current ... [ read the full article ]

I've got 32gb in my PSP 1000 Phat. How is this moving forward? It set me back $115 CDN to add that much memory. Add that to the 2 Wii games I traded someone for their PSP 1000 and I figure I have double what the GO offers for almost half the price.

You could easily call me a Sony fan boy but frankly I wouldn't mind. Companies do this type of thing everyday. They are using hype of this system to get more money to compensate for loss in their other products. It happens all the time with many products. The big misconception lies in the mindset that whatever extra money they get off of an overpriced product will used to go on a vacation. That's usually not the case. The use it to pay off debts. At any rate i'm going to buy one. It's an arguably good product and improves it's portability by removing that UMD drive and the size reduction etc.

Sure the PSP Go price is high, but the rip-off I see is Pachter getting paid for his crap predictions!

I agree. What exactly make this opinion so valid anyway? I mean really? This is just an electronic equivalent to a cheap tabloid. Trivial and useless. For example. When iPod Nano 1st gen came out it cost roughly 90usd to make. It's retail price was far above that. I didn't see the presses stopping there...why? Because that was an arguably great product.

I can't say I'm really surprised. And beyond the features the damn thing looks like an ergonomic nightmare, and I thought the controls were bad before. Instead of fixing the controls they did the impossible and made them even worse.

Is there a complete feature list out for it yet?

There's no telling yet....that's really my only fear is that it'll be unbalanced (heavy screen, light keypad) or just plain tight buttons. Still I guess time will tell....

The go is only padded 30 or 80$ but whats worse is the lack of any coherent official plan to get UDMs on it, I suppose they just want people to either buy it or pirate it....sheesh.....morons....

$80 more, and the screen is smaller? I'll just wait for a price drop which will be in about 18 months after it's release. As for the future of download products. I can see in ten years where all games, movies and any other service will be bought and sent through the internet. Best Buy will be going through what Blockbusters is going through now.

I actually do like it and if it weren't for the fact that is costs more then most every home console on the market I'd consider it.

Rule of thumb : No handheld should EVER cost more than a home console

If this is overpriced, wouldn't that make the iPod Touches EVEN MORE overpriced?

I'm with you there. I remember the first time I saw something like that. I think it was the sega game gear? It was a neat handheld but when it came out it was much more than buying the genesis and that's why it tanked.

I think the PSP Go is a ripoff personally. All these UMD games I have will be unusable if I got a PSP Go (Which I am not for that reason). I know there is a rumor that you may be able to get a free download of games you already own, but then that would fill up your internal memory and memory stick too I expect. I think I will stick with my regular PSP.

In terms of the argument that you could aget a home system for a little bit more. That doesn't really apply to many people. I can most certainly afford a 360. But I just don't want one. Already have the Wii and PS3. But hey oh well.

I haven't post for a while... here goes...

It's pricey? Hell yes. Is it for everyone? Hell no.

Argument: No portable gaming device should cost more than home console.
My comment: Agree, but i can't bring the home console with me on the go. That goes saying, no laptops should cost more than desktops...

As for the odd looking nob position, it's actually not that bad. The PSP Go is much smaller and lighter, so i don't see a problem with my left thumb extending over the d-pad and nub the nob. Sexy!

Between now, there's a trade-in offer from Amazon, $75 for $75 worth of used games. That's $150 credit there, so you can pre-order one for $100. That's what i'll do :)

Here Here ^_^

Besides. I've always thought that the PSP was surprisingly cheap considering what it could do. Music. Videos. Pictures. Internet. Skype. My personal favorite being Remote Play. The fact that you can watch movies you have at home anywhere? That's really nifty.

That and all that will be added with firmware updates makes it gain value periodically. Sure. The games aren't all that but that's what home brew is for. I think the only things missing is youtube capability. That would be cool. Or even Hulu?
