Can't find audio codec anywhere...

I'm new to this, so please go easy...I'm trying to play an MPEG file, but the audio is not supported by any player (the video works). I've read the previous codec thread, but have made no progress even after downloading the recommended software. GSpot gives me an "unable to find an audio codec which will decompress this format" message under Code: 0x0006, Name: WAVE_FORMAT_ALAW, Vendor: Microsoft Corporation. I guess I don't know what I'm doing here, but if anyone has any ideas I would appreciate it.
