if i setup a home theater with a receiver that has pass through audio with hdmi but doesnt DECODE it and a blu ray player that does DECODE HD audio... how do i know if i am getting that HD quality sound and not regular dolby digital or DTS quality? or is there really no noticable difference anyway? ive got the decoding bluray player, but im about to buy a new home theater system but dont want to spend the extra dough for a decoding receiver.. any ideas? thanks

Check your current HTIB for optical input..Connect an optical cable from the BR player's output to the receiver's optical in to get DD/DTS audio..For True HD udio you need a receiver that decodes it vis HDMI(not passthrough)...

No, b/c your receiver(HDMI passthrough)acting as a switch passes the audio along to the TV...You need a Receiver that decodes hdmi audio, not passthrough..

Not really true.........
Most receivers that have HDMI passthrough, will still play the HD audio, if your player decodes and will send the signal as LPCM or PCM, to the receiver. Also, if the player has the 5.1/7.1 multi-channel analog outputs, and receiver has the 5.1/7.1 multi-channel analog inputs, you can hear it that way. Read your manuals.

Why are you even bothering to buy a new system then? You can buy a decoding receiver for about the same, or even less, than you can buy a new system. See here: http://www.amazon.com/Yamaha-RX-V663BL-7...45176923&sr=1-5
If you're not going to buy better equipment, no need to buy at all...

Yes JVC, but the OP asked "if i setup a home theater with a receiver that has pass through audio with hdmi but doesnt DECODE it..

Since they mentioned through HDMI cable and passthrough receiver, hence my solution to run separate optical or, you are correct BTW, through 5.1/7.1 multi-channel analog outputs, and if receiver has the 5.1/7.1 multi-channel analog inputs...
That said, b/c it's HDMI(passthrough) they need seperate audio connection, since the receiver will not detect/decode the audio with HDMI cable connection.....

Read my post again........

It will send it over HDMI. The receiver doesn't need to decode, if the incoming signal is LPCM or PCM. If it's one of the earliest "passthrough" receivers, that doesn't handle the LPCM or PCM signal that way, then it may not. But most passthrough receivers, made in the past 2-3 years will do it. OP never mentioned the model number, and brand of his receiver, so that's why I said to read the manuals.........the manual should say if the receiver will accept and play an LPCM or PCM signal.

No need to re-read your post...
Fair enough..We shall see if the OP posts back the receiver's specs, and if it does indeed detect and process the audio from HDMI(passthrough) w/o separate cable(s) ..Yes you are correct if the receiver detects and processes the LPCM/PCM audio...
