Brand really isn't the best way to determine quality. You can have 5 stacks of Memorex discs that all look the same but were manufactured by 5 different manufacturers.

Check out http://www.digitalfaq.com/reviews/dvd-media.htm
You should read a great deal of that but notice how Memorex has so many manufacturers? You really don't know what you are getting when you just look at the case in the store unless you have done a lot of research. For people personally I always look for Sony discs made in Malaysia, I know from experience that Sony discs that look exactly the same but were made in Taiwan don't work for me. Anyway back to Memorex Is it? CMC? Ritek? Moser Baer? Mitsubishi? Prodisc? Ricoh? Infodisc? It's really hard to know from the outside.

You can use DVD identifier or even ImgBurn to see who the real manufacturer of a disc is.

The reason so many people recommend Verbatim is because not only do they use a quality manufacturer but also because there aren't a million different manufacturers providing Verbatim discs.
