When I burn DVD's in Ulead Movie Maker they won't work in some DVD players. Friends have tried on their NEW dvd players and they won't work in some, but will work on their computer. Are there any settings that I might need to change? Perhaps there is a better program that is more univerally accepted? Any answers would be greatly appreciated. This newbie is fresh out of ideas.

More than likely, your problem has nothing to do with the Ulead program...unless you have another program that does work where Ulead's does not (in which case, just don't use Ulead). You probably need to look at DVD formats. Are you burning DVD+R, DVD-R or DVD-RAM? Whichever you choose, the DVD player you are trying to play the burned DVD on must support that format. For example, I just had to buy a DVD player that supports the DVD+R format, because I (stupidly) burned about 25 DVD+Rs before realizing that my old DVD player would not burn ANY of the burned formats.

Find what you like and let it kill you.

I have the answer for all of you.
The Hollywood DVD's are viewed by your dvd players as ROM. This format can be read by any DVD writer or player. You'll need a tool to change the booktype of the backup from (+/-)R/W to ROM. Liteon says it works only with their drives and specific firmware...
This TOOL?

Also take note:

changing the booktype ONLY works for "+" media, it will not work for "-" media (at this moment in time).

Lots of manufacturers supply a booktype modification program.

All new settop players now play DVD+-R formats, and you'll usually see it marked on the player, even for ones a year or two old.

DVD-R is a more compatable format with older players and will work when DVD+R often wont. If your burner is dual format (does both +R and -R), try the other format. You'll have to buy different media to do it. If your burner does only one, then you might be out of luck unless you can change the booktype. I have found that DVD+R is worthless for a settop older than a year ago.

I was fortunate enough to buy a dual burner and have had to switch sometimes depending on what I was using it for.

Hope that helps.

I stand corrected "drchips".
That Liteon booktype tool does work only with +R media.
