Hi Guys,
Ive been toying with the idea of installing BootMii into the kids wii..But have been hanging back a little.
I only want to make sure I can back up the NAND in case of future bricks with updates or whatever.
Ive read what I can on installing it and can see it seems quite easy if I follow the steps.
I wondered what happens if I cant do the boot2 install ? Can I cancel the operation and leave things the way they are or do I have to choose to install boot1 if boot2 is not compatable?
Is there any way of figuring out before hand if I can use the boot2 method?
If I can do this are there any pitfalls i need to consider before starting this? do I need my wirless network running or is it all done from the files downloaded?
I dont believe I want to install the latest Homebrew channel as i beleive its glitchy ?? so this is why I dont want to install bootmii as boot1 as i read you need the newer Homebrew channel to use preloader to do a back up if the boot2 method wont work?
Id appreciate any comments and would like to know if all you guys now have bootmii installed and how your getting on?
Thanks in advance
Regards
L :-)

Boot2 install allows BootMii to start up when you turn on the Wii, if the SD card is inserted. Yes, you will be able to install Boot2. The IOS Method of BootMii allows you to backup the NAND and allows you to load BootMii with the HomeBrew Channel. I personally have both installed.

ltitleduck, my head spins to all your questions, im also considering bootmii..
HBC 1.0.3 creats problems on some users, So im also hesitant to update the HBC, no harm since i don't used it, most of my apps has channel forwarder.
A follow up question on this: any impact when a new firmware update comes out? what would be the procedure like updating?
- how to remove bootmii? how easy it is to remove tthe bootmii?

Heehee heehee Im sorry fibre :-)
I try to pop in and out of here every so often to keep up but to be honest things seem to move so fast with wii updates and im worried I miss something or am not following at times, you read through so many posts and it can confuse a little.
Ive been lucky to date between yourself and larry ive been guided though my softmod and have had no real porblems to date and as they say if its not broken then dont try to fix it......but bootmii does seem like something I should have for the back up feature alone.
I too wonder if a future Nintendo update would detect bootmii and what would happen? or how do you remove it?
Once again appologies for spinning any heads :-)
Regards as ever

I recommend Bootmii.
The Hackmii installer tells you if you can install it as boot2 or not. The operation doesn't even begin before you know this so there is no need to cancel the operation and leave things the way they are.
No you don't choose to install to boot1. It is a vulnerable boot1 that allows you to install to boot2. There is no installing bootmii to boot1.
You don't need wireless network running to do this. If you install bootmii as boot2 the hackmii installer will prepare your SD card (it puts a bootmii folder on your SD card). This folder has to be on your SD card for Bootmii to come up before the system menu. And if you leave the settings how they are when it is first installed it will come up every time when you turn your console on.
Also you won't be able to control it with the wii remote. You will have to use the power button to cycle through options and the reset button to select them. You can also use a Gamecube controller.
If you don't want bootmii to come up every time you turn your Wii on you can remove the SD card or you can rename the bootmii folder that the hackmii installer placed there (and then change back if you want to use bootmii)
You can also use a text editor to modify the bootmii.ini file that is in the folder that hackmii placed on your SD card to set the system menu to load automatically. And how many seconds you want it to be before the system menu loads.
If you do it this way Bootmii will come up as soon as you turn your Wii on and then after the number of seconds that you set it to passes it will go to the system menu (or even the homebrew channel if that is what you set it as)
It is true that some people have had problems with Homebrew Channel 1.0.3 but I don't think it's as widespread as one would think. Misinformation tends to spread pretty fast.
Finally I have bootmii and it works fine for me.

And Fiber, this is what the hackmii blog has to say about an update.
Update resistance: BootMii as boot2 is likely to survive updates, because it?ll only be overwritten if boot2 is updated. Nintendo has never done that so far. BootMii as IOS would be overwritten with a System Menu IOS update, and Preloader would be overwritten with a System Menu update, both of which happen often and are pretty likely. Interestingly, BootMii as a regular IOS is more likely to survive, simply because it would be installed alongside existing software and won?t be overwritten by any update. None of the options will survive a targeted attack - this is just a measure of how likely a ?normal? update will remove them.

You can use the Hackmii installer to uninstall bootmii.

I'd also like to add that if you don't feel safe trying bootmii then don't use it.
Bricks don't just jump out of nowhere. People only get bricked when they are doing something risky. Doing stuff with wads is what I consider risky. If you are going to be using your Wii like a normal user then don't bother with it.

there is no boot1 install. boot1 is a write-once section of the NAND and CANNOT be changed. not even nintedo can change it. nintendo has yet to update boot2, since there is no need to.
boot2 install will work on 90% of wii's. the 10% that won't work are probably LU64+ systems.
i've had no problems with HBC 1.0.3. 1.0.2 detected the update and i let it install. i've also used the hackmii beta2 installer to install 1.0.3 and it works.
ps2: v7 scph-39001 - independence exploit - hdloader 0.8c - maxtor 300gb hdd
(+[__]%) psp slim ta-085v1: 6.60 PRO B10
wii (powered by bootmii/priiloader): 4.1u - d2x v10beta53-alt (base 56) - configurable usb loader v70r51/devolution r188 - wd scorpio black 7200rpm 320gig w/ ams venus ds2 enclosure
got a whole lot more to list . . .

Thanks AMatthews,cee43ja1,fibre
Your replys has been very helpfull as have the others, I appreciate your comments.
Im feeling like I will have a go at adding bootmii once I pluck up the courage,Ive got a hold of a game cube controller so hope this will help a little.
Id like to ask when you guys installed the newer version of the Homebrew channel did you remove the older one of does it write over the top and update it for you?
@ AMatthews
As for adding wads, if this is riskey then I feel I have to try bootmii as i have had to add several wads during my softmod from 3.4 -v4, I dont recall their names but I was reading about updating an ios_rev13b and in the readme it says there is a prerequisite ios needed and I looked for it and downloaded the file and once again its another wad...I think it was ios38_....
Thanks again
L :)

This would be the most interesting topic i've been on this forum for a while and this interest me so much, i have used starfall in 3.2 but once upgraded to 4.0u have not used any protection for the Wii. So I have to go over again and read what is boot1 and boot2.
As far as HBC 1.0.3 if it does not work you can reload the 1.0.1 which was included in the bannerbomb hack its wad file.
Loading the cios13b, just install using network. I did install 13b but seems few of the games tend to freeze up , so i reverted back to rev9. Maybe it just me, comaparing to rev10/rev12 ,rev13b is more stable.

If BootMii installs to Boot2 you don't even need to install HBC 1.0.3 version.
You really only need HBC 1.0.3 if you have BootMii installed as an IOS.

I installed BootMii to Boot2 and that is it. Skipped installing DVDx and the HBC 1.0.3 version.
I also have Preloader .29 installed.
I use Preloader .29 for hacks and to protect from bad Wii theme or WAD instilations.
But as said before Preloader will be over written when you downgrade or upgrade. So BootMii is a fallback in case I brick during upgrading or downgrading.

Thanks guys,
I think I will give this install a try tommorrow..
Ive downloaded the bootmii installer from the bootmii site here http://www.bootmii.org and I see 4 files within 3 seem to be readme or credit, info files and one is called installer.elf
Is this installer.elf the only file I need on the SD card?
I read I have to rename it to boot.elf and then load it via my existing homebrew....
Thanks again

How can you test if your bootmii backup to boot2 is any good? I did one when I was still on 3.4 and it said it went through fine, and I was able to boot into bootmii on startup, but then I thought (incorrectly) that I messed up and I tried to restore back to 3.4 from 4.0 and it said "unable to read nand.bin".
