Do modchips have firmware ??
Do we need to upgrade them to play latest games??
How do we know which chip is installed and which firmware is present if any??
I have a korean wii with 4.0u which is hardmodded and has HBC and backup channel. Which modchip might be present inside?
Also ,do modchips remove Regional Limitations and play normal DVDs???
If so do I need DVD-X?

Do we need to upgrade them to play latest games?? - Most likely, Yes
How do we know which chip is installed and which firmware is present if any?? - Contact the person you bought it from, or keep burning utility discs until you get one that boots. If all else fails crack the Wii open and take a look.
I have a korean wii with 4.0u which is hardmodded and has HBC and backup channel. Which modchip might be present inside? - If it has a chip, then why would it need the Backup Channel? You might tell which chip by the age of the Wii. If it is fairly old (Within 8 or so months of Launch) You might have a Wiikey or a YAOSM

If so do I need DVD-X? - DVD-R Verbatim, TDK, or Memorex burned at 4X

I put a burned DVD of wii Sports and tried the DISC channel IT said error Unable to read the disc
DOes it mean no mod chip??
The game works in backup channel
