Sony walkman mp4 very poor video sound quality

Iv been trying to put a movie on my Sony Walkman mp4 player and the video works fine, but the sound is horrible. its low and slow and just sounds like a bad cassett tape.
the format is right. iv converted the video so it works, iv done everything i can think of.
any tips for me?
