Actually there has never been an updated version of USBAdvance
The only updated one is for the PS3, but it does work on the PS2

There are also updated tools now to transfer games etc.
Usbutility 1.1

There is also an IOPRP generator , that is needed in some games to make them work

I don't know much about the modhook, except that ifcaro made one version with and one without too test for better compatibility or not.
I would just try it out and see.

Hi, not sure if this is the right place to be asking this but I'm experimenting with usbExtreme/usbAdvance stuff using a mac. I've tried few methods but had hardly luck with successfully creating the ul.cfg file into the HDD and looks like that is the only thing stopping stuff from working properly. It seems easy enough to edit the list manually using binary editor but I don't have a copy of the file.
Could someone upload me a copy of your ul.cfg file? Thanks.

I had this issue too with USBUTIL 2.00 and above , just use v1.1 it creates the ul.cfg . We can't upload it because it's generated for each particular game , it's not a general cfg file

I know USB Sticks are not recommended for use with USB Advance but are there any differences between a regular stick and a very fast one , given the fact that USB 1.1 only allows a transfer of 1.5 MB per second , which both of them can do ?

No there would be no difference as the PS2 is only 1.1
If you mean though for transferring games to the USB drive through PC, then yes as I could transfer a large game in no time at all, when I used this method.
Enabling fast USB hard drive transfer speeds:
Go to My Computer->Properties->Hardware->Device Manager->Disk Drives->(external one here)->Properties->Policies->Optimize for performance. Speed varies from from 1MBps to about 10-15MBps, which is pretty fast! Also, do not forget to unplug the device the proper way (that is Unplug or eject hardware) when you remove the USB drive!

I don't own a PS2 higher than V14, but you could try the USBAdvance for the PS3 and see.
It does work on the PS2.
