Ok, I was getting the "open tray" error here & there for the past week. I started to play my backup of Ghostbusters & after a few "open tray" errors, it booted right up. Played it fine until I shut it off & went to put in COD4. Didn't work. I kept on getting errors. At first I thought it was my writer not making good copies anymore, but when I put in an old 07 Madden which I knew always worked, NOTHING!!
It's only my backup games cuz my original Ghostbusters works fine. Starts right up. Could it be the laser not reading the backup games anymore? I would have said that the drive is not good, but it reads originals fine.
I've gone through tons of threads already & all it comes down to is to buy a new laser. I was even thinking of getting a pioneer 116d, but need to know if it's the laser first.
I would say its a very good guess that its the laser. BUT, before I bought a new laser, I'd reflash the drive. I highly doubt that will do anything, but I don't believe a bad laser causes an open tray error. I might be wrong though.
The flash is good. It is the laser. Working backups to not working without you doing anything, and giving the open tray error, it's definitely a laser.
You might be able to get a little more life out of it by doing a POT calibration to the laser. Google XBOX 360 POT Calibration.
The reason it still reads originals is because the laser doesn't have to struggle to read through the dye like it does in the backup.
