I have done research, but either its the long hours or I'm not finding what I need.

I have recently set up a computer as a "Home theater pc" of sorts. I am using it to watch movies through various players, WMC, Arcsofts TotalMedia Theater 3 are the main two. I have ripped my DVD collection to HDD and am looking to expand to HD movies. I know Bluray is the god amond HD, but I was wondering if there is another formidable format?

WMV-HD, BluRay, x264 HD, SVCD, Xvid or Divx.

I would like to be able to play them through WMC more than TotalMedia Theater but will do either really. I know that WMV is supported by WMC. What is the most size effective, best quality format I can use? I have access to all the editing/converting software I need, I just need to know what direction to start in.

Thanks a lot guys and gals

Well because of the wealth of free and easy to use programs I use Divx or Mpeg 4 compliant for my psp. Blu-ray is very hard to rip and I have not found an easy to use software tool or tutorial for doing this, as such I use PSP Video 9 to transcode movies that are 720p hd compliant for my PSP and AutoGK for transcoding into Divx using the 2gb limit rather than fit to a disc this gives me 5.1 sound and better film quality while keeping the file small. It is very easy to share divx over a wireless network and I do have 4 pc's each with different media and like to be able to access it from my laptop out by the pool or in the bedroom & living room where I have htpc's. However it is a personal choioe of what you prefer. Remember it is completely legal under fair use to back up any dvd you personally own. Some of the new digital downloads from DVD work pretty good as far as sharing from device to device and have good video quality but not all have good sound

of then ones you list x264 in an mkv container will give the best results vs filesize... plus it's an open standard fully documented.
