Hello,

Need a netnanny type of software to block specific websites on a few pc's (editing hosts and many other methods tried are not working due to the proxy settings).

Preferably it should just block specific websites and not categories (or with the option to block categories but specific websites also). Netnanny does seem to block the main sites we want blocked but it seems a bit flakey as a piece of software in that once it has blocked a page the next page loaded also gets blocked even if legit, you have to load the page for a second time for it to not get blocked, pretty shabby I think.

If anyone has experience of good filtering software please post, thanks.

I filter my computer manually this works but if the people using the computer are I.T savy then its maybe not the best idea.

There is a file on your pc that you can use to redirect traffic from the name the user type to any other address you like the file is here.

C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc

The file looks like this:

# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost
::1 localhost
87.248.113.14 www.google.com

In this example the last line is the ip of yahoo and the name off googles website if you go to google you will be redirected to yahoo.com you can add whatever ip address you want and repeat the line for as many sites as you want.

Well yes, but you didn't mention the name of the file, which is Hosts.

And if you had read my post you would see that I have already tried using the Hosts file to filter websites, but it doesn't work when you go through a proxy server.
