You have the YLOD. From the sounds of it you are using either model CECHA01 or CECHE01 (check the back). YLOD is fairly common with these models. The only real way to fix it is to resolder the CPU and GPU, or you can look up a reflow video on Youtube. ONLY do this if you are confident though as you are going to damage your machine if not. Also, reflowing without resoldering is just a temporary fix. It should and probably will last only a couple months at absolute best.
Your best bet here is to send it to Sony. You are out of warranty, but $150 is worth it for a system of this rarity. You can also look up a reapir service on eBay. My user name there is console_folk. I perform the latter with a heatgun for about $40 with shipping both ways, and am working on being able to do the resolder and reball bit.
Like I said though, your best bet is to just leave it sealed, and send it to Sony
Thread title changed from "ps3 trouble", a title in a forum of the same name is as bad as "Please Help". In future please see here about thread titles ~ http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/440385
That was just a coincidence. Dust and heat are actually what cause this problem. My recommendations are to keep it on its side so that the airflow is maximized, not on the carpet, and not inside anything. It needs to be able to fully breath. Also it isn't a bad idea to take a dryer sheet, and wipe the ventilation holes off with it every few weeks. It will leave a residue as dryer sheets do, helping to repel dust.
