Hey all,

New to the forums, so whassup!

I have a crazy idea that I didn't find any info on when I did a search of the forums. Ok...here goes:

Can I use the Xbox 360 HD DVD Drive to play games?
I've read that it only plays movies and I was curious if anyone knows if this is true? Or still true, maybe a firmware hack is now available?

The basis for my question comes from seeing all the videos of people cracking open their Xbox's and bricking them in the process. If I managed to get a hold of a dvd.cfm" class="forum_link" target="_blank">HD DVD drive and bricked that...I'd feel much better only losing out on $20 bucks or so, rather than my Xbox!

I would use it for backing up my games. I feel a little burned by MS after buying a brand new game, getting one small crack in it and the disc is not playable anymore. I called up MS original disc in hand and they said "Sorry, you should be more careful." I'm out the money and the game! For Shame!!

Thanks!

You can get xbox 360 drives (the one's in the console) for $25 off ebay, and then spoof it to your console. I've never heard of anybody playing games of the hd dvd drive... that drive is discontinued anyway.

As long as you follow directions good, you won't brick your XBOX 360. Find out which drive you have and make sure you have the proper hardware before attempting to read/flash the firmware.

Right, that's why they are so cheap now. Another question then...

You mentioned "spoofing" it to the console. I'm not sure what you mean by this...would this be like an external USB connected DVD Drive that fool's the Xbox into thinking its the primary drive?

Let me explain where I'm going with this, I have 2 Xbox's in my house. I'd like to be able to take this drive to either machine. This way I don't risk bricking either Xbox, and I have a means to use this method on either machine. It's not that I don't want to crack open my Xbox, but I would rather avoid that at all costs first.

I'm considering buying one of the HD DVD Drives off eBay or whatever, and then replacing it with an Xbox 360 DVD drive and hacking it to play the backup games. (The one in particular thats cracked.) Is this even remotely possible?

Thanks!

There isn't hacked firmware for the HD-DVD drive and you can't play games on it.

By spoofing you are changing the Drive ID string and tricking the XBOX 360 into think the drive is, for example, Hitachi, when it is actually a BenQ. If you replace a DVD drive and it is different from the original, you must spoof it other wise you will get a E66 error or some error like that.

The "hacked" DVD drive you want to put in the HD-DVD caddy must be connected via SATA. USB will not work. Also, each time you want to switch to a different XBOX 360, you must flash the drive with the XBOX 360s Key and Data so you can play games. Without the key, you can't play games.

This drive connects via USB to the Xbox though... I'm just assuming here that there is a Sata connection inside the drive housing and just feeds to the Xbox via USB.

See here: \/

This is all specualation...near as I can tell this has never been attempted. I'm going to bum around some other forums and see what I can dig up.

I can see this working if A) The 360 will accept gaming input from the external drive (hacked firmware of course) and B) The DVD drives have the same interfaces...(IE Power and Sata).

My initial concern was data transfer speeds, but an HD DVD kicks out a lot more info that a DVD Drive. I'll keep posted on my progress, if there is any.

Ok...could you elaborate a bit? Is it ATA or something along those lines?

Hmm... the picture was showing earlier. Google HD-DVD Drive XBOX 360 dissamble and Llamma has good pictures. Honestly, I'm not for sure what kind of connection it is.

I have no idea either.

To answer OP questions, no the 360 will not except from an external source, only console I can think off the top of my head that will except games from an external source is the Wii using USB Loaders... Not sure about the original XBOX, I never modded mine.

What you could do though, if you wanted 2 DVD drives for your 360 and one being external, take the HD-DVD drive out of the casing and drill two holes in the back of the case. Then put a 360 DVD Drive that has been flashed/spoofed to match your original keys.

I'm not sure were you would find these, but get a SATA cable splitter/hub and connect that to your 360 motherboard. Run one cable to the one in your 360 and the other to your external drive. Do the same for the power cable. But, you would have to have some type of switch or a way of unplugging the drives, because I really don't know how a 360 would respond if two DVD Drives were connected at the same time. You would also have to make some holes in the back of the 360 for the cables.

If somebody wanted a weekend project to do, this would be a good one.

The external drive has an external power source, no worries there. All I can find so far is power splitters for Sata.

Nothing with a switch that I can find yet. I'll keep looking. What about something like this:

Although, I would still need to crack open the 360 to do this for Sata connections. Something I am trying to avoid if possible.

You cannot mod a XBOX without taking it apart. Even if you wanted to do something simple like an external drive, you would have to open the 360 to get the keys from your DVD Drive.

Cars are mad cheap too, doesn't mean I want to pull the engine and then replace my vehicle! Bad arguement.

See this for what it is, a guy with a crazy idea that's not yet been attempted. I will end up cracking open the box. This is going to turn into a trial and error project. More now for my own curiosity. Most likely I don't have the knowledge or time needed to carry this through. I'm a PC guy...if I screw up a DVD Drive, I replace it and it works as I would expect. Not the same thing in a 360, more at stake here.

I'm curious about some of this for different reasons.

I'd really like to streamline my home entertainment center and I was hoping I could swap my hd-dvd addon drive with the internal dvd drive and basically have a 2 in 1 situation so I don't need it outside my system.

Haven't had any luck in researching the idea so far though :/

You can get hdmi cables for the 360, hence the hd dvd is discontinued.

Sorry for double posting (I wanted to make sure the op saw this).

You could do this mod here on your xbox 360, and buy another dvd drive and flash it with the original dvd key and ixtreme 1.6. Then when you want to play backups, you change the sata cable going to the odd inside the xbox to the one flashed with 1.6 (even though just flashing the original drive would be 10x easier).
