Trouble reading from dvd rom, but not the burner

I'm using x copy express. I have a dvd rom drive (Sony DDU1612), and a dvd+- rw. When I try to read from the rom and burn with the other drive it first takes an hour to read, then it gives me an error when writing. If I read from the burner and then burn I can do the whole thing in about a half hour. Why won't the program recognize the dvd rom drive? This is a problem that just started to happen. Initially, it worked as it is supposed to.

your really not supposed to read from a dvd and burn at the same time. do you have each drive on its own ide cable? The dvdrom drive is reading so slow that burner has to write at 1X.

it's actually not at the same time, it reads from the rom drive and gives the notification that blank media has been detected, giving me the option to burn after reading has finished. But the problem now is an error occurs while writing, thus wasting a disc.
