Sometimes when smartripper gets stuck its because of problems unlocking the dvd files. open your dvd in and dvd software and leave it on the menu. then rip.
if it still doesnt work, try using cladDvd XP or Dvd Decryter

First tip is to check that you have enough HDD space in dir where you're trying to rip the movie to. Next tip is to check that there aren't __ANY__ scratches or dust on the DVD disc -- look at the disc so that the light reflects from it and you should be able to see all the minor things on the surface as well. Even minor, almost unnoticeable scracthes render the disc unreadable by SmartRipper.

Oh yes, I forgot, I noticed a big difference in SmartRipper when I upgraded to XP. It used copy at about 12,000 kbit/s and it dropped to just over 3000. I used the driver the manufacturrs gave me (Samsung).

FAT32 systems allows file sizes up to 4GB maximum. Can't go more than that. So if your movie is more than 4GB, your best option is to divide the movie in half. For example... if the movie has 24 chapters, select the first 12, rip as 1 file...then the next 12.
The other option is to convert your filesystem to NTFS since it doesn't have the file size limit. If you are running windows98, upgrade it to 2000. While upgrading, you will get the option to convert to NTFS. I'm not sure if XP runs on NTFS.
Hope this helps.

first, to answer you question, no.. you cannot split the DVD into 2 files, because the DVD itself is not a single file, but rather a collection of files.
Also, I hate to bother you with questions, but it sometimes helps to get all the information up front so that there's no guessing..
1. what version of smartripper are you using?
2. DVD drive make/model/speed
3. how much available hard drive space do you have?
You may want to try opening the DVD in software DVD player, and FF to approx 1/2 way, then pause and rip.. I've heard other people say this works..
Good Luck!

If you can't rip your dvd with samrt ripper, can you play the whole thing in a software dvd player.
If so then get BackupDVD for this rip. I wouldn't recommend using BackupDVD for all your dvds because you can get higher quality off other methods. BackupDVD will allow you to open the .ifo file on your dvd disk associated with the movie. It will then play it like a dvd software player, just very slow (well depends on your quality settings).
To get BackupDVD, go to http://www.download.com and search BackupDVD. You'll get a result "Easy DVD Copy Backup 1.0". Thats BackupDVD.
If you already know what region your dvd is then, you shouldn't have a problem finding the .ifo on your disk. If you don't know then just open the folder VIDEO_TS on your disk and it will select the movie (or it might ask you to select which you want to copy).
This program is a bit different from other encoders. You have to select your output seperately before you do anything else. Do this by clicking file - select output. Im sure you can figure out anything else under the settings menu.
Hope you get that dvd ripped!!

One other thing I forgot, click settings and then output settings. You will see a movie length/file size calculator on the right hand side of the output settings dialog. Make sure that you click "whole" in the max frame settings box to make sure the entire movie will be ripped.

To backup ps2 games, its best to use a dvd burner cause they usually have about 4.0 gigs a game.
To backup using a normal writer, the process involves, deleteing movie files and creating dummy files to replace them. Thats not all, people spend weeks backing up ps2 games to isos. If your really interested in learning I have a lot of info about game copying and booting.
The easiest thing to do would be to find some already ripped games (which is illegal, but so is sharing copyrighted music so...). You might find a few games on kazaa. You would find a lot on Neo-Modus Direct Connect if you connect to a hub dedicated to games. Also you can sign up for services that gather ftp url's that have games (as well as divx, mp3 etc..). I am a member of Divxcrawler. Its only about $11 to sign up for life and they have a section dedicated to console games.

Lame question just so I know for future reference.. You said "it worked! it ripped, it converted, it copied! i backed up my first DVD!" but what exactly was the solution?
As for the PS2 copying, can't help ya there.. sorry.. I will leave that one to Dela, but I think I would love to learn how myself (just in case I get a PS2 and would like to make legal copies of games I own, of course)

then i ripped the second set of chapters, but i cant it to convert...what did i do wrong?
when i ripped the first 10 chapters, i checked them...then to do the second set, i unchecked the first 10, and checked the next set...is that what i shouldve done? should i have done something else also?

Greetings, I am VERY GREEN at this.
I got smartripper to do it's thing and copy it's files to my hard disk. What is next? Is there detailed instructions some where that explains how to get the over 2 gig worth of files on a 700MB CD ROM. Is ther other processes involved?
Again, Have patience with me. I am just trying to make a copy of a DVD with my CD Writer...

is it possible to rip a dvd with a FAT32? i read about that ifoedit, but it looks as if you have to rip it first, and then split it.
is it better to upgrade to windows 2000 or install clean? what about windows ME, or is that another FAT32?

Win2k Pro and NTFS, clean install. That's something that I personally recommend for everybody.

If you're backing up to _CDs_ then you need to encode the video into VCD or SVCD if you want to watch the movie afterwards with your DVD player. Tutorials for both are available at our article section:
http://www.afterdawn.com/articles/
If you got confused and actually meant DVD-Rs, then answer is 'yes', you still need to use IFOEdit.

i just wanted to thank all of you for all your help...i have successfully backed up 2 dvd's to CDr's...much easier then i thought it would be...time consuming thou....
my only other question is...while things are being converted which seems to take a minimum of 8 hours...do i need to not use the system for anything else? if im online and letting it convert in the background, will it cause a problem?

It shouldn't cause any problems other than making your user experience painfully slow -- that's why most of us leave our computers running while we're sleeping to encode the clips.
