Hi,
Just burned my first ever DVD, used Memorex DVD-R, making a backup of my Pirates of the Carribean.

Using Pioneer DVD +-RW 106D that came with this computer.

The only problem was about 57 mins into the playback on Playstation2, got an error msg that it couldn't read from the dvd. A few seconds before the error msg, got a few frozen frames and jerky action.

Had to press "R1" which skips to next scene. Just fine after that. That one scene was the only bad spot.

I re-examined the file still on HDD on DvdShrink, and the fast video clip in the re-author window and seems to play just fine.

I have to suspect that it is a burn problem with the burner/blank media.

Should I burn the file again? A media problem? Burn problem? Any ideas?

Well that's just great. I have a 25 spindle of the things.

Can I expect all of them to mess up?

I'm on a budget here, and plan to go to Staples Monday and get the 10 pack of Sony that they will have on sale next week for $10. Are they any good?

You hit it on the head Jim,

Memorex as an example, has posted figures as high as 50% coasters, not what I would call an impressive record -

Let?s get your media straightened out -

1. Cheap media skips, freezes, fuzzes, pixelats, refuses to be recognized, partially jams and of course, our good old standby, either doesn?t burn or doesn?t play at all :-(

Cheap media is great for text, Data, Spreadsheets, .Jpg and .Gif pictures and is good even for MP3 music BUT for DVD backups - BLAaaaaaT! It SUCKTH in an extremely great way !

2. A top grade media is needed for DVD reproduction !
Ritek G04's or Verbatim are what we?re looking for OR any media boasting ?Advanced AZO Metal Dye?, this indicates a superior dye application, while they are a bit ?pricey? they are acceptable.

Prices online from Meritline.com have gotten Ritek G04 to around a dollar a disc -

Question - If you make coasters out of 3 cheap discs and good copies from 3 Verbatim discs or 3 Ritek G04 discs - which ones then are too expensive ?

Your choice,

BTW, Welcome to our little Club, quilt,

Pete

marginal at best is sony, maybe a little better than memorex. If thats what you have i would suggest you shrinking your movie just a little more so you dont write on the edge as much, that might help you.

Ok, I'm at Meritline.com, looking at these:

Ritek 4X DVD-R G04 Silver Matte on Top
Ritek 4X DVD-R G04 Silver Shiny on Top
Ritek 4X DVD-R G04 Ridata Branded on Top

What is the difference, shiny or matt silver? Thought you said blue dye was better? Will any Ritek do for long movies?

You guys have made me decide to get these ar meritline instead of the next batch at staples next week. Now, help me figure out what pack of 25 to buy. Also looks like I get free ground shipping? Never shopped at Meritline before.

Ritek is the largest mfg of disc in the world - doing over 1/2 of them all.

They make some junk and the good stuff - G04 is the stuff we want -

If you aren't sure ?

(I repeat myself yet a third time, )

Get Verbatim - anything with their name imprinted on them is good.

Ok, I went ahead and bought a 25 pack of the shiny silver Ritek G04 at Meritline.
Can't wait for them to get here and try them.

Thanks for your help.

quilt - You be the man !

Remember, while you're getting the bugs out of your burning programs, use RW media - It won't work on 90% of standalones but we're only using it to practice with :-)
