I have a short (30 - 45 sec) DVD that I want to use on a website. I believe that I first need to convert the DVD to probably MPG format. Will that be the best approach? What is the best software to achieve this and given that some users may only have slow dialup/modem connection should I reduce the file size? [In a photo image you would resample the image from 300dpi to say 72 dpi to achieve this]. Is there a similar option with DVDs and MPG? How do I do this?

The size of the file is measured in bites i.e. Kb or Mb and not dpi - to find out the size of the file right click and open 'properties'. The size of the file you are allowed to upload to a website should be determined by the website server. In other words they should tell you the limit of overall uploaded material in Mb's. Unfortunately DVD files are the same size as MPEG 2 and compressing to MPEG 1 would reduce the quality and size of the image. You need to check first on both the size of the video file and the maximum amount of space you have available to upload too on the website.

To check the file size etc. I need to load the file on my computer. Then I guess then the first question is - How do I create the MPEG 2 file on my hard-drive from the dvd? What software can I use to achieve this?

Actually you are better off converting the format to DiVX which reduces the file size with minimal loss of quality, or you could choose Mpeg 1 (VCD). There is a programme called DVDx which will do this direct from disc. You can download it free from here:
