EXTREME NEWBIE HERE (DIVX to mpeg-2 help)

I have downloaded a video clip from the net that has a .divx extension. I need to convert it over a .mpeg so I can burn it to a svcd. I have been all over the net and have downloaded several programs that are advertised to be able to do this. None have succeeded thus far. I saw on this site that tmpgenc will do this, but when I hit "Open", it gives me the option to open several video formats, but not .divx. Am I going crazy here? Someone help please, I'm losing all my hair.

Rename from ".divx" to ".avi". You'll be good to go.
