empty wav aftering extracting

I extracted a wav from an avi (45 minute tv show) using tmpgenc and I ended up with a 460meg wav with no sound. I then tried extracting the wav using vdub and ended up with with a ~20meg wav that has sound.
I've tried re-encoding using a 20meg wav with a 45min avi had nothing but problems with sound sync so I don't feel like doing that again.
I'm wondering why the wav is "empty" and how can I fix it?
If it helps, this is what AVIinfo says the audio is encoded with:
Audio : 29 MB, 64 Kbps, 44100 Hz, 2 channels, 0x161 = Windows Media Audio V2, Supported
