ok..here is my deal:

I have a p4,3 gig processor..2 gigs of 3200ddr ram...dont know if that really applies to my question, but just trying to cover myself..

On my secondary IDE channel I had the following setup:

A Sony DRU500A dvd burner set as my master (with 2.0h firmware) and a standard cd rom (52x) set as the slave on the same ide cable.

Awhile back (my system has been upgraded recently) I had made data disc copies of some mp3's, pics, etc onto a 4x dvd-r media. These discs had worked when I made them off the same burner I currently am using (Sony). Well, since my upgrade, when I put these discs in my burner to read, it doesnt even open. Its like its not reading these discs that I know for a fact have worked in the past. They have worked over at friends, work, etc. For some reason not working on my Sony.

Thinking that maybe my drive may have been going bad, I bought a memorex dvd romcd rom drive(just a reader..not a writer) to replace my standard 52x drive.

So I hooked it in place of my standard drive as a slave to the Sony dru500a's master. I put my disc in and bingo! The disc opens up!! I was so pumped! But...(there is always a but!) When I try to copy the data off the disc I get a "Cyclic Redundancy Check" error. Arrrrgh!

So...knowing that these discs work elsewhere, what could be my issue? Could it be the jumper settings? Could it be my firmware on the Sony? (the Sony was able to read these discs when I originally made them...my pc has been reloaded several times since I made them) Could I possibly need some sort of driver loaded such as an ASPI driver?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Hi there coady2000, welcome aboard,

It has all the earmarks of a media problem -
"Cyclic Redundancy" refers to your media. With luck, it could be dirty or scratched discs - try a good cleaning - many other times it refers to cheaper media. Cheap discs skips, freezes, fuzzes, pixelats, refuses to be recognized, partially jams and of course, our good old standby, happening far too often, either isn't accepted (the old "cyclic redundancy error" notice), doesn't burn or won't play at all :-(

Try a firmware upgrade, many times this allows the drive to see a wider range of discs.

Using media for DVD backups we recommend Ritek G04 OR Verbatim (branded) media.
