I bought a 10 pack of Memorex 1x-4x cd-rw. Using Nero (version 6.3) two of them will write at 12x (Nero lets me select 12x in the speed box). The rest are 4x. Why, oh why, can't I select the speed of the recording myself? If two of them write and re-write at 12x then I am willing to chance trying to record on the others at 12x. Is there any way or any program that lets me select a record speed faster than the cd is rated?

You cant and shouldnt "overclock" the burn process for RW discs. This is because RW discs fall into "classes":
1x-->4x: Multispeed
4x-->12x: HighSpeed
24X: UltraSpeed
32X: havnt encountered yet, I would imagine UltraSpeed

Maybe I didn't explain properly. I will try again. I bought a box of 10 "Multispeed" RW disks. When I used them all of them except for 2 write/re-write at 4X. For some reason 2 of them write/re-write at 12x. I didn't change the record speed. Nero automaticly changes the speed of the burn. I think that if 2 of them will write at 12x why can't I try the others at 12x? I don't know if they will work at 12x but I want to try. Is there a program that will let me record at a speed higher than the rating of the cd-rw.

I am sure there are RW disks rated faster than 10x but I haven't seen any. In fact, the last time I saw anything rated above 4x was over a year ago. I live in Phoenix, Arizona. What country are they selling 24x RW CDs in?

They most likely sell 24x disc in US (I live in Canada).

Regarding your issue with the discs note that some disc manufacturers make crappy discs which cant be burned at the speed they are advertised (cough cough Memorex cough cough) :P

Thanks for the info. I guess there is no way to burn a cd faster than it is rated.

Even if you can burn at higher speeds it's not always best to do so. I have a Plextor Premium 52X yet I never burn CDRs faster than 32X because going higher typically introduces more errors. To me it's not worth it - I'd rather have a better burn over saving a minute or two, but that's just me :)

So you're in Phoenix, eh? I'm in northwest Glendale :)
