I use CD-RW for file back up. All went well for a time, then there were intermittent problems/freezes/crashes/etc. Now my operating system (Windows ME) flatly refuses to recognise a CD-RW when I try to run one (CDs and CD-Rs are OK).

I thought my CD-RW equipment was dud so I replaced it - still the fault remains. On consulting this Site I went through the steps recommended in:

http://cd-rw.org/articles/archive/aspisetup.cfm

and
a. downloaded and installed the latest adaptec aspi.
b. checked that my Nero software (with aspi) was in place.
c.downloaded and installed "force ASPI".

None of this has worked - so I am now at the next stage in the process - seeking further advice through this forum.

I hope someone can come up with a solution. I am very frustrated!

1. What is the model of the burner?
2. I know you said you followed the guide on the ASPI thing but just do this one tiny check for me.... run the ASPICHK program (either the one that comes with the ASPI you downloaded or you can get it from here: http://www.hazza.dsl.pipex.com/TOOLS/ASPICHK.zip ) -- make sure all the little wee version numbers are ALL THE SAME.
3. Try, in the device manager, to uninstall the device and then reboot to let Windows autoinstall the device again :-)

Hello. Sorry for the delay in getting back.
My Burner is Philips PCRW5232.
I ran the aspi check - all OK. I then uninstalled the Burner, together with all the associated software (Nero, InCD), and then re-installed.
Result? The thing is now functioning properly. So I am happy and very grateful for the advice.
The whole set up stll has a flaky feel about it, but from reading these threads and more of the same on the Microsoft Forum I guess that is simply characteristic of Rewriters interacting with Windows.
At least I know what to try (and where to look for help) if it flops again.
Once more, many thanks.
PETER
