Hi

Does anyone know which media can be used with the HL-DT-ST DVD+RW GCA-4040N?

I've tried to write 2 Arita DVDs (RICOHJPNR01) of data and got a number of read errors when verifying the first disk. On the second I got even more read errors, especially

towards the end of the disk.

I am just wondering which media to try on this drive next?

I would be very grateful to hear from anyone who has managed to successfully write and verify DVDs of data to this drive. However, I would also like to hear general comments about which media is likely to work.

Thanks to anyone who takes the time to reply.

Paul

RICOHJPNR01 is generally very good media.

What speed did you burn the discs at? If data accuracy is of the utmost importance I would recommend burning very slow.

The edges of DVDs can be problematic so it's best to limit your total file size to 4.4GB. If you continue to have higher error rates at the edges then keep lowering your total file size until you find the sweet spot.

Hope this helps :)

I kinda sorta forgotta to answer your question about media!

Verbatim DataLifePlus a quite good for archiving data.

Thanks a lot for the reply - I'll give your suggestion of that disk a go.

Being only able to write 95% of the disk seems a bit unacceptable- is this the normal practice for DVD writers?

It's like being sold a plane ticket from London to New York, and being kicked out over the Atlantic just before you reach the coast...well sort of(!)

Sad but true :( It's not the writer though, it's the media. Due to manufacturing shortcomings the discs don't read/write well at the edges.

Very nice analogy tho :)
