Regarding this subject matter being called a newbie is most like an overstatement, newbie newbie would be much closer.

As I mentioned, my DVD Player Toshiba SD-4900 only playes DVD-R along with all the CD types. I do not plan on purchasing a new DVD Player for few years down the road.

I am presently looking to purchase a LITE ON 812 with the 8X DVD-R. But after reading a few threads here and there, I think I read that DVD+R/-R are going to be obsolete. My question is what angle should I be approaching on my purchase of DVD burners? Remember my DVD player only plays DVD-R.

Also I plan on using the DVDS for digital family photos, analog 8mm family videos, saving important files, and pc games. I plan on purchasing DVD Xtreme and Xgames through 321 Studios. I am aware of the ripper needed in these products. So am I getting a good product for my projected projects?

As you can see I have not purchased anything. So any advice, suggestions and/or words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

thanks
Chris

1) Do NOT buy anything 321 Studios has to offer , because you can find tools that'll do the same for FREE (and they dont leave a warning screen or watermark like DVDXCopy etc)

Dual Layer is the next thing to happen , Ahead (people that make NERO) have just released software to allow this. The hardware will be creeping out there bit by bit soon...

My friend had a Toshiba , only played PAL ... no NTSC (well it played NTSC but only in black n' white) !!
Suggested he buy a Pacific 1002 for £38 from ASDA & he is over the moon (lol).

Thanks Herbsman

Regarding the Toshiba, according to the manual, it will play DVD-R. Are you telling me that since it will only play DVD-R that it will not be any good or will not play? Please explain. I am very new to all of this. Lets just say I am not even crawling yet.

Hey bocko57,
My 3 year old Panasonic plays DVD+R media beautifully, (haven't tried any DVD-r's)even tho the manual doesn't list DVD+R as a supported format. Have you tried DVD+R in your player or are you going by what the manual says. You might be surprised, as I was.

Don't look for DVD+R or -R going obsolete anytime soon. And from what I'm reading, the industry is leaning more towards plus media at the time, between the two...especially DVD+RW. Even tho dual layer burners and Blu-ray etc. are right around the corner, like everything else, they will be pricey for awhile, including the blank disks. At your stage, I would recommend you start with any good single layer burner, get some experience under your belt and then graduate up to dual layer once the prices come down. Just make sure that the burner you buy will handle all the current formats ..DVD-r/rw AND DVD+r/rw (most do these days). Then you'll be covered with your Toshiba stand-alone...hopefully. (just read herbsman's post)
And as herbsman said....forget about 321 studios.
Once you're ready to burn, stop back and I'm sure you'll get all the help you need to get ya started. (A little reading on your own thru the pages of this forum goes a long way too ;)
Cheers and welcome ;)

thanks Doohickey

I think I will be ordering the Lite ON 812 it provides 8X for both the +R/-R.

And yes I plan on staying away from 321Studios.

Thanks
