I'm only very new to ripping DVD(this is the first one I have done it) and I had been having trouble with ripping, but I thought that I had figured out how to rip a DVD on MAC.

I have used DVDBackup to decode the DVD then DVD2oneX (because this is the first time I have ripped I was only testing out the software and have only used a demo version that only comperesses the first half hour and only in the 'MOVIE ONLY" version) and then I have burned it using Toast 5.

I have 2 MACs, a powerbook with a G4 and an iBook with a G3. Both computers have MAC DVD play version 4.0 but I am only able to get my copy of my DVD to play on the powerbook and it won't play on a normal DVD player.

I have also tryed to use other programs if it is a program problem and have used MacTheRipper and OSex but have not found anyother programs that work on Macs.
Would anyone be able to tell me if it is something I have done during ripping or a computer problem or something else.

Also any additional suggestion on how to do a better job at ripping would be very much appreciated.

Because I'm reletivly new to this I'm not completely sure what you mean, but the DVD that I tried to rip was Monty Python The Holy Grail and I burned it on a DVD-RW.
I'v also tested the DVD on all the other Macs at home and it works on all of them including another iBook, but mine and the DVD player. On the Computer the message I get is:
DVD Player encountered a system error
Could not detect a valid media file. [-70025]

I realy wouldn't have had a major problem with this but the laptop that it doesn't work on is the one that I have to use them on when I go away.

The problem is the DVD-RW. The combo drive in older G3's
does not support the DVD-RW format and it looks that neither
does your DVD player. Just stick to DVD-R (get good quality
ones like Ritek) and you will not have play back problems.
Check this thread for pictures of Riteks (my favourite is the
Ritek Branded one)

Thankyou so much for your help my iBook is one of the older G3's (4'ish years) but my dads which is also an iBook is only about 2 years and the DVD worked on that one and his DVD Player is only a 3.2. Would that difference in age of the two be enough to account for the problem in the combo drive?

Yes. Your combo drive is working perfectly it just happens that it does not support the DVD-RW format. Nothing to do with the version of the DVDPlayer. As I said stick to DVD-R media and they will play fine on your iBook.
