Hi everyone, I have had super success using Roxio for burning dvd's, however I recently upgraded my dvd player to Toshiba sdh-400 and Harmon Kardon dvd-101. Some of my back up discs will play in them and some will not. For example the sony I have plays everything with out a problem and it was only 80.00. The higher end players are DVD-R/RW compatible I just do not understand why they will not play the disc that plays on the sony. I use TDK, Memorex 4x dvd-r discs. I already took the toshiba back and am ready to take back the HK for this reason. Any Ideas. Thanks to all who respond.........

I hate to tell you this but it's your new DVD player. A lot of the high end players do not like home-made DVD's/CD's. (Same thing happens on some Denon and Linn players.)
You'd get a lot better mileage (for compatibility anyways) by buying the cheapy made-in-China DVD player.

Ahhh I figured as much.....I was truly baffled....If anyone has any recommendations as to what DVD player works well with our Hobby please let me know. The DVD compatibility link really doesnt help as it has the Toshibas sdh400 down as working. Thanks again

Not sure which compatability link you're referring to but there's a wealth of info on players regarding our hobby at this link :)

Nice link thanks. That is the one I was referring too. Only problem is it doesnt have Harmon Kardon, but it does have the Toshiba sdh400. No comments from anyone as of yet.
Well I went thru all my back up dvds nd played them all one at a time through my HK. I would say less then 5% of them do not work in the unit while all the others do. As I have an extremely nice Surround System I will probably keep the HK as it works for most of the discs. In fact the ones that do not work say mp3 on the TV. Odd as there is no MP3 on the disc. I will try to reburn the disc in a different format and see if it helps. Stay tuned... :-)

Since your HK is new, it may be beneficial to try just a few of several diffent makes of DVDs to see which make/brand works best before you run out and buy a slew of discs it may not like :)

Nephilim:
Would you believe I just bought 100 TDK DVD-R for $99.00. I opened them and realized thay are only 2x.......Arghhh I never used 2x always 4x I hope it works. Any ideas does it mean 2x just takes longer to burn?

Yep, 2X will take around half an hour to burn but otherwise they're fine.
Out of curiosity, who manufactures the TDKs you just bought? Nice price too :)
In case you don't have it already, here's an outstanding little DVD utility that will tell you who made them (along with loads of other good stuff too)

Whassup is right.
There tends to be less "compatibility" issues with the cheaper ones made in China. My neighbor imports knockoff stuff from China (flashlights, lighters, etc.) that are made to look like items from Sharper Image. Through his contact, I was able to buy six DVD players for $100 (I only bought them because its was only $100, how crappy can they be?). The brand name was BWM (not a typo, guess they're trying to fool you, they fooled Circuit City). The one I opened plays everything: DVD+-R, DVD+-RW, VCD, CDs. For $17 bucks, my 3 year old can beat the crap out of it for a year and I'll be happy that he doesn't watch on the big TV.
I asked my neighbor why it works and my Samsung, Toshiba and Pioneer are iffy with certain discs. He told me this: "you know and I know that what China produces is not exactly on the up and up." He showed me his Golden Wave player from China. A few button sequences on the remote and up popped an option to disable copyright protection.
Bottom line: that $80 player was designed to play almost anything you put in it.
