I received the following email today:

LAGOS -NIGERIA
VERY CONFIDENTIAL
DEAR SIR,
I AM THE MANAGER OF BILLS AND EXCHANGE AT THE FOREIGN
REMITTANCE DEPARTMENT OF THE UNION BANK OF NIGERIA
PLC. I AM WRITING THIS LETTER TO ASK FOR YOUR SUPPORT
AND CO-OPERATION TO CARRY OUT THIS BUSINESS
OPPORTUNITY IN MY DEPARTMENT. WE DISCOVER AN ABANDONED
SUM OF US$15.3M (FIFTEEN MILLION THREE HUNDRED
THOUSAND DOLLARS ONLY ) IN AN ACCOUNT THAT BELONGS TO
ONE OF OUR FOREIGN CUSTOMER WHO DIED ALONG WITH HIS
ENTIRE FAMILY IN NOVEMBER 1998 IN A PLANE CRASH.
SINCE WE GOT INFORMATION ABOUT HIS DEATH WE HAVE BEEN
EXPECTING HIS NEXT OF KIN TO COME OVER AND CLAIM HIS
MONEY BECAUSE WE CANNOT RELEASE THE MONEY UNLESS
SOMEBODY APPLIES FOR IT AS THE NEXT OF KIN OR RELATION
TO THE DECEASED AS INDICATED IN OUR BANKING
GUIDELINES. UNFORTUNATELY, NEITHER THE FAMILY MEMBER
NOR THE RELATION HAS APPEARED TO CLAIM THIS MONEY, AT

RELEASE THE MONEY TO YOU AS THE NEXT OF KIN OR
RELATION OF THE DECEASED FOR SAFETY AND SUBSEQUENT
DISBURSEMENT SINCE NOBODY IS COMING FOR IT AND WE
DON?T WANT THIS MONEY TO GO INTO THE BANK TREASURY AS

THE BANKING LAW AND GUIDELINES OF UNION BANK OF
NIGERIA PLC STIPULATES THAT IF SUCH MONEY REMAINED
UNCLAIMED FOR A PERIOD OF FIVE (5) YEARS IT WILL BE
TRANSFERRED INTO THE BANK TREASURY AS UNCLAIMED FUND.
THE NEED FOR A FOREIGNER AS NEXT OF KIN IN THIS
BUSINESS IS OCCASIONED BY THE FACT THAT THE CUSTOMER
WAS A FOREIGNER AND A NIGERIAN CANNOT STAND AS HIS
NEXT OF KIN OR HEIR.
WE AGREED THAT 20% OF THE MONEY WILL BE FOR YOU AS
FOREIGN PARTNER, THEREAFTER MY COLLEAGUE AND I WILL
VISIT YOUR COUNTRY FOR DISBURSEMENT ACCORDING TO THE
PERCENTAGE INDICATED.
THEREFORE TO ENABLE THE IMMEDIATE TRANSFER OF THE FUND
TO YOU AS INDICATED. YOU MUST APPLY TO THE BANK AS A
RELATION OR NEXT OF KIN OF THE DECEASED, INDICATING
YOUR BANK ACCOUNT NUMBER AND LOCATION WHEREIN THE
MONEY WILL BE REMITTED. UPON RECEIPT OF REPLY BY
E-MAIL. I WILL SEND TO YOU BY FAX THE TEXT OF

Heh, I receive those "Nigerian spam" emails around 10-20 a week, each time slightly modified, but always the same idea.
But the scariest thing is that there are _way_ too many stupid morons on this planet. Read this:

Ah yes, we get spammers to our forums every now and then -- being a bad mf Nazi-regime administrator, they normally tend to get bored of fighting the windmills pretty damn soon :-)
It's inevitable to get all kinds of morons posting commercial stuff to forums like ours -- this little hangaround place (forums only) gets appx. 1M page imps a month, believe it or not :-)

What surprises me is that anybody nowadays would be stupid enough to try these things. I thought people would get bored of Tupperware parties, but they didn't. It is a shame there isn't a national cull every year, of anyone dumb enough to fall for these scams.
I guess there would be less traffic congestion....
