Hi everybody,

I'm also looking for a free DVD authoring tool. Not a DVD backup tool like Shrink.

I have DVD-video compliant MPEG-2 files that I want to burn on a DVD. Thus I need to turn those MPG files into VOB files and create the corresponding IFO/BUP files.

I've heard of commercial products such as TMPGEnc DVD Auhtor and DVD-Lab but I don't need the powerful features they provide. My authoring needs are basic: very simple menu or even no menu at all. I can even live without chapter points.

Would IfoEdit do the job ?

Cheers.

TMPGEnc DVD Author does cost $70 (with the AC3 plug-in costing an additional $30 , handy plug-in though) but it is what I use myself & it is highly recommended.
There is a 30 day trial , download URL : http://www.pegasys-inc.com/en/download/tda.html

A free piece of software that does this task does not spring to my mind readily , not sure if I have ever heard of one that's free [only trial] to be honest.

@ keithyb:

There is an alternative. You might know MainConcept for their famous MPEG encoder. They also have a video editing tool called EVE (Easy Video Editing). They just released version 2.0.

http://www.mainconcept.com/evev2.shtml

For the same price as TMPGEnc DVD Author (70 $) you get video editing and MPEG encoding and DVD authoring in the same tool. I expect the image quality to be very good but I didn't compare with CCE yet.

Cheers.

I compared EVE's image quality with NeroVision Express and CCE Basic. See this thread in the general video discussion forum:

@ keithyb:

You can turn a DVD-video compliant MPEG file to VOB for free with IFOEdit. Go to the Author a DVD menu. It takes a video file and a audio file, thus you have to Demux your source file if it contains both. Of course this is very basic authoring: no menu at all. There is a way to create chapter points but it's quite tricky.
