Here's an interesting one maybe someone can help me with...

All the region 2 ALIENS special editions contain seamless branching allowing either the theatrical OR special edition version of the film to be viewed. None of the discs are particularly large in size, and well within the range of compression for DVD2One to compress adequately.

However, odd things happen when ripping in full disc mode... Although the projected file size size is around 4.36MB, the actual file size (when processed) is always around 300MB smaller.

I have tried several ripping techniques (shrink, dvd decrypter etc) but always get the same results...

Any ideas?

Hi Outlaw,

The projected size is just an estimate, right? Thats why Shrink has a Deep Analysis feature, to more accurately estimate the projected size of the compressed video.
That would be something to experiment with, see if Deep Analysis gets the files sized closer to to 4464 MB target size. Using that 300 MB would result in less compression being required, improving the picture quality.

Cheers,
Frank

BTW I like the long version of this movie, One of my favorites!

Ta 4 the reply.

I have to admit, I have baulked at the deep analysis feature with shrink - due to the extra time it takes.

However, the problem seems to be there in all the good compression tools - particularly DVD2One - which is usally great at this sort of thing.

Another interesting thing is this... If I extract the movie only (choosing either title, theatrical or special edition) the movie compresses out at the full 4.36!

Strange, innit?
