I am a newbie but thought people might find this interesting. I just downloaded some software from www.gamejackal.com that lets you play your games without requiring a startup CD. It has worked for all my games so far. The software is free but is a beta licence. Might be a good addition to your toolbox :-)

Also, I have always found this forum very helpful.
