Hello all....Great site you have here.Just recently got my burner and I am looking forward to backing up my dvd collection.

Some quick newbie questions..

I have been currently burning my dvds on dvd+R but im seriously thinking about changing over to dvd-R considering I am having about a 50% sucess rate on my burns...Should I use DvD+R or - ???Is their a certain brand you would suggest(currently using memorex)??

I have been having trouble well trying to back up Kill Bill.First burn(dvd xcopy) played fine up till the end then it would skip and then freeze.Second burn(DvD shrink) was just nasty.Intro to the movie was missing and very bad skipping.

Could this be caused by the encryption on the DvD???

I wasnt sure, so what I did was take my Rundown(kill bill is currently at a friends so i had to make due) DvD and open it in Shrink.I noticed it said that the DvD had encryption so I closed Shrink, opened decrypter and used that to make an ISO.I then extracted the files and opened it with Shrink and noticed that the encryption was gone so I burned it and it runs greats.

Did I go about this the right way??Or was this a fluke??

Hi Digifiend, Welcome to the club. First, your present 50% rate is probably caused by the Memorex blank media. Memorex is sort of on the don't use list right now. They buy there media from a company that makes poor quality media and put the Memorex name on it. Try getting some Ritek blanks or Verbatim.

Second, if shrink starts and says the dvd is encrypted, try this trick. Start playing the dvd with your player software for a few seconds (Powerdvd/ Windvd). Then stop it and open Shrink again. It should then go through the process. Shrink needs a kick every so often.

Your way of using Shrink and Decrypter is ok but probably not necessary. Shrink will decrypt about 90% of the dvds out there. Good luck.

Jerry

Hiya Digifiend,

Your enthusiasm is inspiring! I'll try to get to your queswtions in order so here goes,

1) Please explain how your burns are unsuccessful. Does the software finish but they don't play in your set top player? Do they play in your PC?

2) The format you want to use depends on your player. Here's a link to find out what your model likes:

http://www.dvdrhelp.com/dvdplayers

3) Skipping and freezing are the classic signs of low quality media. The best deal going on media is Ritek G04 which can be found online for a little under a buck apiece. Try rima.com or newegg.com

4) XCopy, Shrink and Decrypter all remove the encryption so you're fine there. Here's a couple links to Decrypter and Shrink that are very good and should explain things for you:

Shrink

http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/dvd9_to_dvdr_with_dvd_shrink.cfm

http://www.chrismccann.co.uk/dvd_shrink_3.htm

Decrypter

http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/small_dvd_2_dvdr.cfm

When Shrink said there was encryption, it was only notifying you of that fact - it can and will remove it. A large movie like Kill Bill is best done as a "movie only" copy meaning the extras are left out. This is because the more you compress a movie the more the overall quality suffers so leaving out the extras results in less stuff to compress.

You have a decent start, but I think you'd benefit from reading through the guides and trying better media :)

I'll be waiting for a staus report!

Read the guide that Scuba Pete wrote it seems to be one of the best for newbies and get some Ritek G04 DVD-r I get mine from www.meritline.com/dvd-r-blank-media-1.html great price and good shipping charges (sometimes free shipping), with DVD's cheap media gets expensive and causes a lot of headaches. Good luck and welcome.
