Ive had a look round and cant find an answer to my prob, sorry if it is else where, but i havent seen it!
My standard procedure is to open up a movie in virtual dub, save sound as a wav and recode the new wav with the original video in TMPEGenc as an mpeg which i split if necesary to fit on two svcd's
problem - I open the divx file in virtual dub to take the wav file as usual and i get this message -
Virtual dub has detected an improper VBR audio encoding in the source AVI file and will rewrite the entire audio header with standard CBR values during processing for better compatibility. this may introduce up to 6570ms of skew from the video stream. If this is unnacceptable, decompress the *entire* audio stream to an uncompressed wav file and recompress with a constant bitrate encoder (bitrate 128.7 +- 11.8kbps)
Now i thouight that by saving the wav file, that was uncompressing it. What am i suppose to do exactly cos its a damn good quality divx, but i need to make an svcd out of it, and id like them to talk the same time as they move their lips not 15 seconds before or after!
I have found this a problem in other movies which ive given up with so please help.

vdub ive found has problems from time to time, thats why i never use it anymore.
the only program i use for audio decompression is a program called decompressor.exe which is bundled with avi2vcd, its far and away the best audio decompressor ive come across
so download the whole avi2vcd package and ur'll find the decompressor.exe proggy with it, thats what u want.
http://home.cogeco.ca/~avi2vcd/
it creates a whole new file video included with the audio decompressed to wav, so theres no chance of a sync issue there
also dont use avi2vcd to create vcds because the quality is crap, and when i say crap i mean crap, all you need to worry about is the audio decompressor it comes with ;)

I meant look at it tonight sorry!
Anyhow, you sound pretty pro at this. What would you recomend to make the SVCD mpeg with to get the best quality, and what setting would you use to keep the aspect ration the same. Cos ive got my widescreen tv i like them to play like my DVDs and im never sure ive got the best quality i could have.

i use tmpgenc for all my conversions, the quality is excellent and its very cheap if you want to buy the full version(theres a 30 day free m-peg2 demo with the free version, after those 30 days you wil only be able to convert to mpeg1(vcd), or theres tmpgenc plus which has a 14 day free m-peg2 limit, but with the plus version you can register it and youll be able to convert to m-peg2 indiffenatly), to get the best quality output from tmpge set the motion search precision to high quality(highest quality will give you the same results as high, but it takes double the time to encode).
as for the aspect ratio, if ur source is 16:9(widescreen) in aspect ratio set it to '16:9 display' and in video arrange method set it to 'full screen(keep aspect ratio)'. if ur source is 4:3(fullscreen) set the AR to 4:3 display and again in vid arrange method set it to full screen (keep aspect ratio), you must keep the same aspect ratio as your source.
free version: http://download.pegasys-inc.com/download_files/TMPGEnc-2.521.58.169-Free.zip plus version:http://www.pegasys-inc.com/en/download/tp.html
if you dont know what aspect ratio your source is, you can download something like 'g-spot codec information'(free-ware) which will tell you everything you need to know about your source

if ya got any other probs just let us know

Got exactly the same message using Virtual Dub:
Virtual dub has detected an improper VBR audio encoding in the source AVI file and will rewrite the entire audio header with standard CBR values during processing for better compatibility. this may introduce up to 6570ms of skew from the video stream. If this is unnacceptable, decompress the *entire* audio stream to an uncompressed wav file and recompress with a constant bitrate encoder (bitrate 128.7 +- 11.8kbps)
Tried running through Decompressor 1.4 but same result- 2 second lag on audio sync towards middle/end of movie. Next option as above - use a constant bitrate encoder?!?!

try running the file thru 'divfix', this prog will pick out any errors that may be causing the audio to go out of sync, then just run the new file it creates thru decompressor.exe again.
http://divfix.maxeline.com/
also, is the audio in sync when u play the file normally??
