I'm trying to get a DVD player program installed on a W98SE machine.

When trying to install WinDVD and PowerDVD, both tossed up the same Windows same error:

Unhandled Exception
Error Number 0x80070725
Description: Incompatible version of the RPC stub.

I inserted a "PC Friendly" DVD to install the InterActual Player. It installed ok but gave me this error:

Error PL4013: Playback failed due to a problem with the video subsystem. You may be using an unsupported display mode or your system may not have a working decoder installed. Please ensure that your DVD decoder is functioning properly by launching it from Start | Programs. Click "Help Online" for details on how to correct this problem.

Followed the above instructions but got no help.

I'm using a NEC ND-2500A DVD+/-RW. One time I got a warning that my 'Region Code had not been set and to set it to US. I would be allowed to set it up to 5 times.'

I went to Control Panel | CDROM and check the Properties of my 2500A. There was no place to set or change the Region Code. (I'm in Oklahoma, USA)

Anyone have any hints, tips or ideas?

thanks-

Hi RWG
On the W98SE machine could you tell us it's hardware list. Some of the DVD burners need a processor speed of 1G or more.
Hope this helps

That means you have a RPC2 DVD Writer (as they all are these days_ , you can change this by flashing firmware to your drive so as to make it RPC1 [meaning your 5 chances to change region will not matter any more].

( found at http://forum.rpc1.com/viewtopic.php?t=21539&highlight=NEC+2500 )

You really should reconsider about using fat32 file system & think about NTFS (so you dont get any 4+Gb exception errors).

Peace

Got the update - Thanks Herbsman.

The machine in my sig went up in smoke - 12v side of my power supply cut lose. Got 4 HDDs, DVD+RW, DVD-ROM and CD-RW. I'm replacing parts but meanwhile I'm on my trusty old email machine.

On this W98SE machine I was directed here by a good friend and Google-er. It fixed my problem of not being able to install WinDVD or InterActual Player. I'll wait till I'm back running XP to flash the RPC1 fix to my NEC ND-2500A.

SUMMARY

When trying to install or run the product, the following error message appears:

"0x80070725 Incompatible Version of the RPC stub"

This error is caused by a bad version of the file "oleaut32.dll", which usually resides in the system folder. To correct the problem, we will remove the old file and then install the file again.

MORE INFORMATION

To correct the problem:

Download the DCOM file appropriate for your system, but do not run it.
For Windows 95, download dcom95.exe
For Windows 98, download dcom98.exe

Windows 98: http://support.installshield.com/kb/files/Q105810/dcom98.exe
Windows 95: http://support.installshield.com/kb/files/Q105810/dcom95.exe

Select Start, Shutdown
Select "Restart in MS-DOS mode"
When you get the command prompt "c:\WINDOWS", enter these commands, each on a separate line:
CD c:\windows\system
rename oleaut32.dll oleaut32.ww1
exit
Windows will restart. Expect this error message: "a required .DLL file, C:\windows\system\oleaut32.dll", was not found"
Log into Windows
Select Start, Run, and run the file you downloaded in step 1

Reboot your computer

This should correct the problem.

If, for any reason, this procedure causes your computer to not function properly, reverse the above action as follows:

Select Start, Shutdown
Select "Restart in MS-DOS mode"
When you get the command prompt "c:\WINDOWS", enter these commands, each on a separate line:
CD c:\windows\system
rename oleaut32.ww1 oleaut32.dll
exit
Reboot your computer
