Hi .. firstly let me apologise if this has been covered before - although looking through the forums I could find no answer to my problem.

I have recently bought a DVD Writer (LiteOn 851s). So far I have used the writer to make backups of several films - including DVD 9's. I am using the following software ..

DVD Decrypter 3.2.1.0 which I use for ripping and burning.

DVD Shrink 3.1.7.6 which I use for compressing DVD 9's to a single disc.

My problem is regarding the R2 PAL version of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. Although DVD Decrypter seems to successfully rip the files (to make a large .iso file as I have been doing with all the other films), when I try to open the image file in DVD Shrink, i get the message:-

DVD Shrink cannot continue

Failed to read file c:DVD_VIDEO.ISO

I have also tried using DVD Shrink to get the files straight from the disc - and this too has proved unsuccessful.

If anyone could help me to open the file using DVD Shrink, or inform me of any other software (pref. free) that I can use to make a backup I would be very grateful.

Thanks a lot!

PS - I have a limited understanding of how these things work, but I would not class myself as a techno wizard - so please be language / technical expertise friendly in any replies.

Thanks again in advance!

There is a problem with the disc in that certain files will not rip properly even though Decrypter said it had completed the job. This sometimes happens and there is not much you can do - try thoroughly cleaning the disc. You should not use Decrypter with DVD Shrink - always use Shrink only to open the disc. Try deleting the Decrypter files and then try Shrink again.

or what you could do is use decrypter in file mode instead of iso mode , rip the dvd to your hard drive then open shrink and select open files , then the folder your after is the VIDEO_TS , load that in then let shrink do its thing .
but before doing any of that just try shrink on its own to rip then shrink because most of the time decrypter isnt needed to rip your dvd .
i only use decrypter iff shrink runs into an error .
hope that helped :o)

Ok.

Thanks for your help, but ...

Discmania -I believe the problem is something to do with the actual file structure. I have read on other sites that it may be something to do with the audio files (chinese & english) or the fact that it is a 'super bit'DVD ??? Either way - definitely more than being a case of a dirty disc.

As regards using Shrink to open the disc and then rip the files...I have had no luck there either. When I try to open the DVD I get an error message saying that it cannot open it. Hmmm :(

This is proving very tricky - so any more ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for the help already!!! I have not experienced this problem with any other of my DVD 9's - and have successfully backed up a lot of them as explained above.

Weird!

It seems like you may have a pirated disc. In any case I think you just have to give up. I doubt if any software will successfully rip and burn the disc. Sometimes discs become damaged by tiny hairline fractures on the disc surface which can prevent accurate reading and ripping. It may play OK but cannot be backed up. Does the disc freeze at all when played on a standalone ? That would be another symptom of the problem. When I get a disc that refuses to rip like that I just give up as it's not worth the hassle. Fortunately only less than about 5% of discs have this problem in my experience.

The disc plays fine on stanalone.

As you say - I will give up for now - but keep looking for any solutions. From what I can gather, the problem is caused by the audio file being in mandarin and english - there's quite a bit of discussion about this particular disc on other sites, but not many answers!

Thanks for your help anyway!!

The different language audio should not make any difference normally. Have you checked that the disc is actually copyrighted? Pirated copies have already had the macrovision removed and the disc will usually be a DVD-5 in which case you can try copying directly with Nero or other burning rom and this would also explain why Shrink has problems ripping it since it's designed for DVD-9. Some pirated copies today however are now DVD-9 in which case there's not a lot you can do. Good luck.

hi

1, try ripping main movie in decrtyor in file mode! set options in file mode to main movie. and tick all boxes on left to remove ifo/bup puo's etc etc...

also if it doesnt work change the brute force method!! in TOOLS/SETTINGS...

2, also in general! set "RCE protection to region 2"

basically there alot of settings to try..

hope it helps...

Nothing here to see, move along folks.

Yep .....

I changed EXACTLY what you advised me above rotary ...

1. Changed file mode to main movie - and highlighted all the boxesto remove ifo / buos etc.

2. Changed RCE protection to Region 2.

3. Used first brute force option as shown above.

The file ripped which I then opened and compressed using DVD Shrink before burning to disc using DVD Decrypter.

No problemo!

hi there

thank you...

it may have ripped the whole dvd by one way or the other alone!!!???

it may have been just RCE not set correct! its a guide to its ripping process!

or maybe just set to remove bup/ifo PUO,s limits, either may have done it...

but what i am trying to get at is you may grab the whole movie now! the settings are found!

Thx.....
