After bad results with pinnacle I have bought this Hi-Speed USB 2.0 DVD Creator (Video studio 6) and I haven't had a chance to test it since the capture is black and white I have looked at the settings and tried to make sense of the guide changed it to PAL to see if that would help, reinstalled it twice and I don't know where to look next. Can anyone else point me back in the right direction apart from PC world where I bought it for £60.00? Most grateful dying to give it a go as it's supposed to be 40 times faster than the pinnacle lead I have. Thanks

Well generally speaking you get a Black an white image if you capture a PAL Signal with a NTSC Capture Device or a NTSC signal with a PAL Device...
Sometimes when Captureing from VHS Tapes the Copy Protection on the VHS tapes can also cause a simular effect..This is about all I could thing of right now..

There are No Good USB Capture devices under $300 and the Only good ones are the High end Hardware Mpeg encoder Devices...
I allways recomend that if they Must get a External Capture device to get a Firewire Analogue/Digital Converter device or a Good Quality USB Hardware Mpeg encoder device like those made by Canopus or Matrox, Or if you have a regular PC then a PCI device will allmost allways be better than an external device at half the Price...well good Luck

Perhaps I should have mentioned with my Pinnacle studio 8 the same movie captures in colour, although not very well, that is what I find so puzzling and I am using PAL to catch a movie that I taped from the TV "The Hitcher" with this new devices I bought DVD Creator Video Creator with a speed 40x faster than the USB.1 Port. I am not looking for perfection just something that is watchable. Would you say under the circumstances that it would appear faulty? Minion thanks for your advice.

Well If you Recorded the VHS Tape from a PAL TV and you are useing PAL Video capture settings (720+576, 25fps) then there could be something wrong with the device...USB Devices especially the cheap ones are Very Buggy anyways and the 2 that I have owned Captured Very Low Quality Video even the USB 2.0 device I had....
Even though USB 2.0 is 40 X Faster than USB 1.1 which means it runs at about 480MegBits Per second (Burst rate)which is a Fair amount of data about 60mb per second and PCI Port can transfer up to 6 Times as Much data as USB 2.0 Port, So the Best USB 2.0 Devices are the Ones that have a High Quality onboard Mpeg compressor chip in them to compress the Signal directly to Mpeg1/2 before transfering the data to your Hard drive then there is never a need to be useing the Full Bandwidth of the USB Port....

If I were you i would first check your Cables to make sure that they arent Broken or getting Old and if they Check out OK then take it back for a Refund and if you can get a PCI card, But if you have a Laptop or something then Maybe a Firewire device Might be Best like a Canopus ADVC-100 which is one of the Best quality devices you can get in it"s Price range but will cost you upwords of about $250 but you wouldn"t have to worry about bad Quality or about Sync problems or bad color because the ADVC-100 has features that are meant to overcome all of these issues that are inherant to Analogue Video Capture....Cheers
