I've been downloading some full movie video files from kazaa (.avi format). I've been unable to play them in real player, quick time or windows media player. I downloaded blaze media pro and I get a message saying a certain decompressor cannot be found. What am I supposed to do with these files in order to view them?

The answer is convert the audio.

Download virtualdub http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/video_tools/virtualdub.cfm.

Open the video file in virtualdub and then click video. Select direct stream copy. Click audio and select full processing mode. click audio again and click compression. Select no compression and click ok. Click file - save avi. The avi you save will be bigger than the original but your movie will now be playable.

I downloaded virtualdub. After selecting the movie in question, it took all night to load, I got the following message:

Couldn?t locate decompressor for format ?DIV3? (Microsoft MPEG-4 V3 [Hack: DivX Low-Motion])

VirtualDub requires a Video for Widows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable.

Any additional ideas or comments?

An idea would be to download the FHG Radium Mp3 Codec and the divx codec 3.11 alpha. VirtualDub will tell you that these codecs are hacks but ignore it, they work pretty well.

Divx Codec - http://www.divx-digest.com/software/divxcodec.html

Radium Codec - http://www.riphelp.com/downloads/radium_codec.html

Now VirtualDub should be well able to read these files.

now I have three directories in the my downloads directory. Virtualdub, divX 3.11 alpha, ra-codec 12. I hit the extract file in each new direcotry and some things happened and then I tried to run my movie and I got the same long long long load process that finally stalled. What now?

I am having the same problems with certain files I am getting from Kazaa. My end result is to get the files converted to VCD format to watch on my capable DVD player. Sometimes I need to convert with Virtualdub, then convert that file with TMPG encoder to then burn with Roxio on a VCD disc.
This seems like a little more work than I would like to do, any other options?
To Sabshaga- I will keep checking here to see if you resolve the problem that we both are having, if I come up with anything, I will post also.

You should have got a file called Software divx_311alpha.exe. That is the divx codec setup. Look in your start menu for DivX ;-) MPEG-4 Video Codec. Run the file "Run Me First!!.exe".

I dont understand about the radium codec. You should have got a zipped setup file for it.

When you have those two codecs installed then virtualdub should have no problem loading in your divx file. After all, you did justy install (Microsoft MPEG-4 V3 [Hack: DivX Low-Motion]) and thats what they asked for!!!

the only executables in the DivX_311 alpha directory were set stereo and register_DivX. I ran them both but I do not have a diX menu item anywhere in my start up menu.

Thats odd, they must have changed it in some way. When i downloaded it I found just one setup file and it worked properly. All I can tell you is that is definetly the divx codec that virtualdub has been asking you for but I dunno why you didnt just get a setup file. If you have msn messenger I'll send you the version I have!
